Ever heard of the colossus of Rhodes? If not let me tell you more about magnificent work of art. The colossus of Rhodes was a very huge statue of the Greek god of the sun Helios, in the city of Rhodes on an island.

It was built in 280 BC by Charles of lindos and is considered today as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was purposely built to celebrate the successful defence of the city of Rhodes from the attacks of Demetrius Poliorcetes who had been attacking it for a year with a huge army and navy.

It was said to be about 70 cubits which is about 108 feet and approximately the same height with the modern day statue of liberty. Much of the iron and bronze were reforged from the weapons Demetrius' army left behind. It has therefore earned the title of being the tallest statue of the ancient world. It collapsed during the earthquake of 226BC although some parts of it were preserved.

The people of Rhodes did not rebuild it again after this unfortunate events. In 653, an Arabic force under muslim general Muawiyah and his army conquered the city of Rhodes and the statue was completely destroyed and it's parts sold.

In 2008, it was reported that a new colossus would be built at the harbour entrance by German artist Gert Hof . It was to be a giant light sculpture made from melted down weapons all around the world.

Till date, the actual location of the original monument remains in dispute.
