Cultural Manners That Are Starting to Disappear?
Indonesia, a country that has ethnic and cultural diversity, is unique and makes it stand out in the eyes of the world. Cultural diversity that cannot be separated from Indonesia's geographical breadth has played a major role in thousands of different cultures from each region.
Indonesia's very diverse culture has similarities and common threads that make Indonesia a country that has a friendly population, this is none other than the culture of politeness inherent in every region in Indonesia. Courtesy is the way we behave and communicate with fellow human beings. Courtesy is a must and something that needs to be done when we establish a relationship with someone and are not hindered by what and who the relationship is and become human provisions in socializing.
The culture of politeness, if you look at the explanation given by Bourdieu about habiastu, can be seen from the culture of politeness that has been formed in the process of social structure to become an immaterial culture which is a habit of society (Bourdieu, 1977).
This proves that courtesy is a culture that is already embedded in the structure of society and becomes a habitus or habit.
A real example of politeness as a culture in Indonesia can be seen in the behavior and speech of the Indonesian people who are friendly and respect the interlocutor. In addition to this example, Javanese society is one of the tribes that still prioritizes etiquette, when walking in front of people they usually lower their bodies, this is a form of courtesy that has been embedded in the environment.
The depiction of an example of how this culture of courtesy applies in this society is evidence that the existence of an immaterial culture in Indonesia is one of the characteristics that is strongly attached and becomes the nation's character. The distinctive features that highlight make it an attraction for other countries that have a positive impact on various lines, and this is clearly a culture that must be maintained and preserved.
The onslaught of globalization and technological advances that narrow the social scope makes it easy for foreign cultures to enter and be uncontrolled. This culture enters and can be accessed by the internet which is used freely so that the attacks that occur cannot be restrained, indeed because the need for the internet is one of the primary human needs.
The foreign culture industry that comes in often causes local Indonesian culture to be eroded by this and makes the original Indonesian culture replaced by foreign culture. This is exacerbated by the presence of inappropriate stigma about local culture indicating an ancient and tacky culture, and this further adds to the waning of immaterial culture such as the disappearance of manners.
The many examples of cases on social media that show foreign cultures, especially western culture, which are used as a center for determining social lifestyles, are a turning point to see that local and original culture from Indonesia is getting eroded and faded, the culture that should be a characteristic has become a thing. meaningless to meet social needs.
Manners that serve as social guidelines can be replaced with foreign culture which is channeled through various cultural industry media such as films and websites of western artists that are easily accessible and imitated by their lifestyle, in order to keep up with the times and stamped with modern individual symbols. This reminds us that the ancient stigma of local culture is a very sophisticated weapon to destroy that culture.
Therefore, immaterial culture such as politeness which is the guideline for socializing the Indonesian people must be maintained and maintained, as well as controlling the development of the times and exposure to foreign cultures must be emphasized so that awareness to love local culture.
