Plansee: A Magical Lake Hike In Austria
I love the Alps, few things are as magical as being in the mountains. Then, when you find a beautiful, bright blue lake surrounded by amazing alpine peaks, you know you have reached heaven.
So the Plansee is located in the north of Austria in Tirol, close to the border with Germany. The bigger Plansee is actually connected to a smaller lake called the Heiterwanger See and you can hike around both!
As you can see we did the walk in about 5 hours. We left from the campsite that we stayed at at the end of the Plansee. You can also park the car there to start the hike at parkplatz am plansee. I would recommend starting the walk there as it gives you a lovely option for breaks at nice points during the walk.
The walk is quite flat and gives you two options for a drink/ some food on the way. About half way through there is a little campsite at the Heiterwanger see with a little cafe and some benches to have a rest on. When you continue on, right at the point where you get super tired after about 18 km there is another campsite with a lovely bar that also does a decent pizza!
As you can see we went on a little bit of a wet day, but it was still a priceless experience. It is quite a walk, but there is not that much height difference so it is very doable. Just make sure you have decent walking fitness and you should be good to go! At the end you can decide to follow the upper road instead of the car road and I would really recommend to take the high road. Not only does that mean that you do not have to walk next to the cars, but you also get an amazing view over the Plansee.
I really loved this hike in Austria and would recommend going there! Make sure to dress for all weathers, as weather in the alps can change quickly!
I have known the beauty of Austria since Euro 2008. One of the best countries to avoid long summer in my country. XD
