Palm Springs (2020): Funny and Unnerving All in 1
I recently watched the movie Palm Springs (2020) and I was surprised by the story line and the depth of this movie! So I wanted to share my thoughts with you.
The Story
Nyles (Andy Samberg) wakes up on the morning of a wedding in Palm Springs. All seems well and at the wedding Nyles meets Sarah (Cristin Milioti) and they seem to hit it off. Despite some strange vibes in the air, they totally hit it off and spend the whole evening together. But then something totally weird happens. Nyles is shot at by a man with a crossbow and has to run away. Sarah also runs and ends up at a mysterious cave with a large light...
Granted when I tell it like that it seems super lame, but somehow with the air of comedy Samberg manages to make it seem super normal. It turns out that that cave is like a giant reset button. The next morning, both wake up, only to find out that it is the day of the wedding... again!
It turns out that Nyles has been dealing with this issue for quite some time now, stuck in this perpetual time loop. Sarah, who is new to it, struggles with her place in all this. They go through different phases, but in the end resolve to not just have fun, but to seek for a solution. But it seems like something else is developing between them during this time loop...
Why I Liked It
Funny thing is that when you write it down it all sounds very silly. But this movie manages to marry the funny with the unnerving. Samberg is of course great at comedy as we have seen in Brooklyn 99, but it turns out he can also give depth to this movie.
As time goes on the movie starts to unnerve you more and more. You start to wonder what it would be like to be stuck in a time loop. What would you do? How would your relationships with other people be? Would you go mad? And this movie makes you think about all of it.
I would really recommend to watch it!
And just out of curiosity. How would you respond to being stuck in an infinate time loop?
