Similarities I Have Seen

This article is the third writing prompt for @JonicaBradley similarities. In this article I will not talk about a specific thing, but about things I have experienced or been a part of.

My Father And I

My father and I are very similar. Whenever we went to visit someone in the extended family, they could never stop saying how much I looked like my father. Not just externally, but our inner qualities are very similar too.

The older people in the family who knew my father as a child were the ones, who saw the strong resemblance in me and more, than once mentioned, that it was like seeing my father as a child. I couldn't quite picture it, but when I got hold of photographs of my father as a child, I was struck by how much I really looked like him.

I have a photo, that is his school picture. My parents and grandparents were curious to see if I could find him among 30 kids. I did it the first time. No wonder, because it really was like seeing myself in the picture. I felt like I travelled back in time. The resemblance was striking. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of him to share at the moment, which I regret.

Similar Designs By William Tierney Clark

William Tierney Clark designed bridges. I want to write about this, because one of his works is close to my heart. To my knowledge, he designed three bridges. Two in the United Kingdom in London and Marlow and one in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, which is one of the most beautiful bridges over the Danube. The latter is close to me, because I was born in Budapest. All three bridges are suspension bridges and are very similar.

Unfortunately, only two of the three are still standing. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest and the Marlow Bridge in Marlow. The third one, which was the original Hammersmith Bridge, no longer exists, but has been replaced by another of the same name designed by Joseph Bazalgette.

The original Hammersmith Bridge was opened in 1827. It was the first suspension bridge over the River Thames. The bridge links Hammersmith and Barnes.

Marlow Bridge

Marlow Bridge was built between 1829 and 1832, also over the River Thames in Marlow Buckinghamshire and linking Bisham in Berkshire.

Széchenyi Chain Bridge

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is located in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The bridge was inaugurated on 22nd of August 1849. It was rebuilt on 22nd of November 1919 and then bombed on 18th of January 1945 during the Second World War. It was rebuilt after the war and renovated on 22nd of November 2011.

Terraced Houses In England

I have lived in England for 15 years and have lived in a few cities over the last decade and a half. From small seaside towns to the capital I have seen different villages and towns. Each county and town has its own peculiarities and history, but what is very similar everywhere and typical of English towns are the red brick terraced houses.

Not all of them are the same, of course, but they are very similar. In each of these towns they are on two sides of the street with their bay windows and the main entrance facing the street and the back garden opening off the kitchen. They are usually single storey houses with 2, 3 or sometimes 4 bedrooms.

Some houses are the same throughout the street, but others vary in color and construction. Some houses open directly onto the street, which I personally find very strange. I lived in one of those houses and it was hard to get used to going from the living room straight out onto the street. The other types of houses at least have a small front garden or terrace.

Twins

Twin pairs have always fascinated me. I know twins. I had two sets of twins in my class and a set of twins next door. They used to say they were like two peas in a pod. It's true. There was a time when I had to think twice about calling one half of the pair by their right name. Since everything was the same, even their clothes and it was very difficult to find something distinctive about them.

We even joked sometimes, that no one would notice if it wasn't the person they were waiting for on a date. Think about it, if something comes up for one of them that makes them unable to show up, they just send their other half and everything is solved. Of course this is just a joke, but it might work.
