Overthinking can have detrimental consequences. When everything runs so fast, it is better to leave some time for yourself to slow down. Replacing negative self talk with positive self talk can also be advantageous. People who overthink need to reframe their thoughts. Focusing on how you acted, not what you should have done, can significantly reduce your unnecessary thoughts. Learn to disagree with yourself and be open to learning from mistakes. Disagree with your own criticism. Be kinder to yourself.
Here are six tips to deal with overthinking.
Don't Fight Your Self-Criticism
Sometimes our self-critical voices are just resistant to positive change. When this occurs, it can be helpful to acknowledge that internal voice. However, you do not have to act on the advice it provides. You can instead choose to ignore the voice and replace it with a new one, that provides advice that will help you. By choosing which voice to listen to, you can actively choose to grow and improve. In time, when you're in a calm state, you can address your original internal criticism again.
Drop The Criticism
One of the problem with overthinkers is they tend to criticize others. They are always looking to find something wrong with other people or something wrong with a situation. They do this, because they are looking for ways to justify staying stuck.
Sometimes the people, that are criticizing are just being themselves. Maybe others are being defensive, irrational, or crazy. Overthinkers will find a way to criticize the situation or other people no matter what. They will find a reason to use as an excuse to stay stuck or justify criticism. Some criticism is necessary. You can't please everyone.
However, there is a point at which criticism becomes destructive. By criticizing others, you are actually criticizing yourself. If you don't think you can achieve something or if you don't think you are good enough, chances are someone else isn't going to think it either. This is self-defeating.
Giving criticism in the form of a negative thought is likely to make you feel worse. Always try to give a positive thought about a situation or a person before criticizing.
Learn To Disagree With Yourself
When you really think about it, who's to say that your actions are wrong? In fact, you can even agree with your self-doubt. For example, you might think, "I'm acting too aggressively." Then, you can choose to disagree with yourself. You can think, "I'm in a high-stress situation, that I'm not used to, leading me to act this way." Changing your thoughts like this allows you to accept yourself while still improving yourself.
All of this self-discipline, self-control, and positive thinking sounds very tiring. It certainly isn't easy. However, it can be well worth the effort. You will find that when you are in a calm state, you are able to think more clearly about your situation. When this happens, you will have the opportunity to take steps forward towards a goal.
There are many times, when it feels like you are stuck in a rut. You may feel, that you are unable to change your situation. However, when you change your thought process, you can see, that you have the power to change your life.
Direct Your Thoughts Into A Specific Area
When thinking about your situation, direct your thoughts towards a particular area. For example, you may find that you are having thoughts, that lead to ruts. These ruts may include a place, that you don't want to go back to, a person you don't want to be around or a life, that you wish you could leave. By directing your thoughts towards this area, you may find that these ruts are causing problems in your life.
Try to remember your feelings, while you were at a particular area. For example, you may remember feeling sad, angry or mad when you were at this place. By remembering these feelings, you can see why you don't want to be there. You can also see, that this situation is not beneficial to you. By identifying the problem, you then have the choice to choose to leave the situation or to deal with the problem in a different way.
Focusing on the negative in your life and in this situation is likely to bring you sadness and frustration. You can't change your situation, that was in the past and you can't change who you are. Instead of focusing on the negative, you can choose to refocus your thoughts in a different direction.
Positive Self Talk
Self-discipline, self-control, and positive thinking are good strategies to choose, when you want to improve your situation. These strategies will help you get out of ruts, that you may find yourself in. However, there are also times when you need to take positive action. Sometimes change isn't just beneficial, it's necessary.
When you recognize, that change is necessary, keeping a positive attitude becomes much easier. You can work towards changing your situation through positive thinking, through positive action, or through both. When you choose to take positive action, your chances of success improve.
Successful completion of positive action leads to positive results. When you take positive action and experience success, you can experience a sense of accomplishment and calmness. When you experience these feelings, it's easier to maintain a positive attitude.
Change Your Thoughts To A More Positive Direction
You can choose to change your thoughts in a more positive direction. Try to see the good in your life. Focus on things, that are good. Try to remember the pleasant experiences that you've had. By changing your thoughts in a positive direction, you can create a more positive attitude. This can help you to focus on the positive aspects of your situation, rather than the negative aspects.
When you choose to think positively, you can create positive results. In time, you can improve your situation. You can change your life for the better in many ways. This can be as simple as changing your surroundings or as serious as changing your life. By changing your situation and yourself, you can affect the way you feel and how you approach life.
