If you are familiar with non fungible tokens (NFT) or just getting started to learn about it, I am sure you have already come across with some NFT websites, where you can create, buy and hold or sell these tokens. These are usually digital art cards or cards related to certain blockchain games. Just to name a few Street Fighter, Alien Worlds, R-Planet and many others.
NBA Top Shot is very different to these cards. These are not digital arts and these are not cards. They are called moments. They are basically short video clips, where players having their moments during the game. Each video clip shows a few camera angles of the moment.
NBA Top Shot is officially partnered with a company called Dapper and all NFTs are licensed by NBA. Each moments have their own serial numbers that are on the blockchain and they are unique and cannot be replicated and sold elsewhere.
Packs
There are three different tiers: common, rare and legendary. Each tiers includes different packs such as Cool Cats, Base Set, All-Star Game, Rising Stars, Seeing Stars, Premium, Deck The Hooks, Season Tip-Off, Run It Back, Lace 'Em Up, Got Game, NBA Finals, Rookie Debut, The Finals and Cosmic. Each moments have minted in certain amounts. In the common tier the minimum edition size is 10,000+, in the rare tier the minimum edition size is 150 the maximum is 4,990 and in the legendary tier the minimum edition size is 25 the maximum is 499.
Regarding the prices they go from $9 to all the way up to $230. These sets sell very quickly. As of writing now they are all sold out, but they do drops and when new releases come out, they notify you via email. You can check the packs and prices here: https://nbatopshot.com/packs
Marketplace
You can explore the marketplace by searching in different categories such as players, teams, sets, tiers, latest moments, most valuable listings and heat moments just to name a few. The fewer moments are minted the more expensive it gets, but it depends on the player's popularity as well.
Challenges
To complete a challenge you have to collect a certain amount of moments in a limited period of time. Once you have completed your challenge, you get rewarded by an extra moment.
Community
You can find collectors by searching under the community tab. Collectors can link their discord and twitter accounts to their NBA Top Shot account.
Purchasing Your First Moment
Although I mentioned earlier, that all packs are sold out, you can still visit the marketplace and make a purchase there from a collector. First a deposit have to be made to the website to the Dapper wallet. Deposit can be made two ways. Either via bank transfer or by cryptocurrency. Final thoughts
This is something, that I have never seen before as an NFT website and I actually got very excited about it. I have signed up, but have not purchased any moments yet. I like basketball, but not an expert about NBA. I have to do more research about it and learn much more. I like the concept and the website is beautifully designed. I believe, that this site will be around as long as NBA exists.
For the future I can imagine this kind of NFT sites in different sports. I am thinking about boxing moments or football moments.
