Reading Habits That Will Transform Your Writing Skills.

Do you know that there are different ways writers read?

If you are a writer, you might have acted these habits even without knowing.

So, I decided to write on that.

Here are some ways you can read to improve your writing skills.

  • Read voraciously.

No doubt, good writers are first good readers.

I could remember when as a young girl, I would read novels and other books as if my life depended on them.

I never knew that I will someday become a writer.

Same with every good writer I know.

The truth is, whatever we write has been written by someone else sometime but in different form. So, what's new?

  • Don't just read for fun.

If all you read are just storybooks or novels that tickle your fancy, then, you aren't ready to develop your writing skills.

As a writer, you will need to read both the interesting and "not so interesting books".

What matters is that you are gaining perspectives that could come handy someday.

  • Ask questions from what you read.

Have you ever had to pause while reading and ask yourself questions like "what is the core message of this book?", "Is this writer really hitting the point?" e.t.c.

Until you start reading this way, you might be missing out on improving your writing skill.

  • Take note of words, phrases or expressions.

This one is really common to writers and you might have done that too without knowing.

Do you underline new words or phrases in a book? Do you make note or take screenshots of some expressions while reading?

That's another way writers read.

  • Read a book more than once.

This is one thing I really didn't like doing until recently.

You can't actually say you have gotten the best out of a book if you don't read it multiple times.

The more you read a book, the better you understand and learn from it
