Pull Over
Cassandra rushed to her after the call she received from the hospital that Dan was rushed into the Intensive Care Unit. Thank goodness that she had her phone by her side in the bathroom else, it would have been another missed call.
Without waiting a second, she poured water on her half bathed body, entered her room, took a pants and blouse while wiping her wet body with the towel and breezed to the garage to ignite the car.
Again, she forgot her phone on the bed. What a day? Everything seemed to be working upside down. Cassandra said to herself:
Calm! Be calm. Everything is gonna be alright.
Stepping out of the car as gently as possible, she walked to the door and made to turn it open, something like an electric shock pushed her back. She was scared.
" I just looked this door now and it wasn't behaving like this"
She waited and thought of putting off the power supply to the whole house and tried to open the door again.
As she went to the changer-over box to switch the central light off, it was beaming danger in the control.
Without a choice, Cassandra walked away to the car and drove off. Now it became clear that February isn't a good month for her. If she would have to be tot the hospital safely, then she must mind the speed limit of her care, else she may get into another trouble, sons he thought.
Swinging the steering into the major highway that leads to the city central hospital where Dan has been admitted, she noticed a traffic jam some metres away and decided to use the street's routes to cut-off the jam. This is just the beginning of her problem.
Into broad street, the first major link to the highway, another traffic emerged but this is a little mild.
Just there, the traffic warden flagged her down for no reason.
Good morning, madam.
The officer said.
You are not wearing a seat belt. Kindly step down from the car.
Cassandra made for an explanation but the rules are clearly stated and she has violated them.
The officer continued:
Your side mirror doesn't stretch to see behind.
This is just not what she had bargained for today.
Would you mind handing over the car keys?
Her tears began to gather. She could not phantom what state Dan is at the hospital and what help she could render to ensure his life is not in any danger at the moment.
Here, she said to herself again.
Calm. Be calm. Everything will be alright.
Steadily, she moved to the officer before he could book her for traffic offences and revolt driving licence. Staring at the emblem of his shirt where his name and initials were boldly written, Cassandra called out as sexily as she could.
Josie, I know my offences. Just show me mercy, please. The city hospital said that my husband is in a terrible state and my attention is needed. So, I had to rush over. We have only been married for a few weeks.
Now Josie pitied her. She is just a lovely woman trying to keep her love alive.
He handed her the keys and asked her to drive safely.
You need to be safe first before getting to your husband. So, drive carefully.
Now, the tears dropped on white shirt as she received the keys to her car.
Cassandra opened the driver's door of the car to turn on the ignition but it won't come up. She attempted again and the battery indicator was showing red. Again, her tears began to roll down her cheek as she tried coming down to explain to the officer.
Before she could utter a word, Josie asked the lieutenant with him to lose the service car battery to ignite Cassandra's car.
The car boozed with heavy smoke from the silencer. It was made to warm up for a few minutes before cassandra's car battery was replaced and she drove off, waving a goodbye to the officer.
Now, there are no more traffic jams that disturb the easy flow. She remembered what Josie had told her and drove with care till she got to the hospital.
Dan sat on a seat opposite the nurse with his hand bandaged. It was just a little cut but in a dangerous spot on his wrist.
Cassandra stood there dumbfounded. She had thought it was a fatal accident.
She couldn't cry, yet she couldn't control the tears from flowing.
I thought I was going to lose you when the call came through.
With a huge hug, she cuddled Dan as they walked to the pharmacy to get the drugs on the prescription list.
It is always like that when someone we love so much is a problem but they shouldn't have scared her so badly that she was unsettled even while driving
