Examination Is A Catalyst For Reading
Good morning dear bloggers. There are so many amazing articles to read here and I have had enough of them stick to my library as part of my knowledge on blogging and facts of life. As we begin a new week, there are possible heights we wish to climb and surpass during the week. Any individual who wishes to accomplish the feats should be prepared to face the rudiments.
Today, the second term examination in my school started and everywhere was calm. You can imagine the calmness around the college premises. You can bear witness that one thing that can humble learners is examination. In every corner you walk, there are students hiding and reading, probably catching up on missed contents or instructions during class sessions.
Before the main examination which is for sixty marks, the learners had to write a continuous assessment which spans for six to seven weeks. The continuous assessment was written every day for that period of weeks. The CA is for forty marks. For each student, the learners are to write four Cas, each for ten marks and in total, forty marks.
Reading Culture and Examination
Have you discovered that the reading culture of this generation has been depleted by a lot of influence? I could look back in time and remember how we fought to read a newly printed book from known authors in our school days. You know, books like No longer at ease, The gods must be crazy, the gods are not to blame, the village headmaster, Efuru, the lion and the jewel, Visit of the gods, tempest, arrow of the gods, anthills of the savannah, so long a letter, lord of the flies, Macbeth and many more.
One does not have to be an art student to scamper through those books. You don’t want to be told the story lines, hence there is this urge to push for getting a copy of your own or go borrowing or reading them up in the library. The reverse is the case today as books have become a strange thing for this generation of students. Many factors could be linked to this attitude.
The Internet
The internet has exposed learners of this time greatly and they have become lazy, lazy to reading. This is not to say that the internet is totally bad, it has its influences, highly on excesses and less controlling procedures.
Social Media
Learners prefer to engage on social media platforms for a long period of time rather than to study. Research shows that the volume of school aged individuals is more than those in school. As a result, there had been a serious reduction in the reading culture of learners.
Negligence
Students could be naturally lazy, seeing reading as a big issue. This may be caused by the number of graduates roaming the streets jobless. Some have even termed education as a scam. Though some learners still believe in education as the antidote against poverty and social vices and those with this idea have kept on with improving their reading habits.
There are more factors that have affected the reading habit of learners in this dispensation. They could be internet fraud, peer influence and whatnot.
However, education and examination are two paths that would always cross. Education is incomplete without examination or evaluation. There have been several and severe arguments that examination is not the true test of a child’s or learner’s intelligence.
Examination & Assessment Is Pivotal To Education
While some schools of thought have opined that that assessment cannot be withdrawn from education, it stated that examination is valid but not a true yardstick to measuring a learner’s intelligence. The western school of thought has postulated that the learners are open to different learning needs, and if their needs are put into consideration, their true ability would be measurable.
On the contrary, examination, test, or assessment have aided organisations in placement, promotion or demotion of human resources within the confines of its sector of engagement.
No matter the theory that is developed today, examinations in schools have come to stay and will continue to be used as a channel of measuring students' efficiency and deficiency.

I agree. What we study must be evaluated to determine understanding. As much as possible, apply it to our daily basis to learn more.
