DAY 3: BULKY

He looked on at the man, shocked at how clean he was looking and how calm his demeanor was even though he'd just killed 10 dragonflies just a few minutes ago.

"Calm down, Alec. I'm an ally," the man said.

The hell?

"How the hell do you know my name?" he asked, trying to sound authoritative.

"Calm down," the man said, pulling out a strange cylindrical disc from his pocket, "Moira said you should have this."

Moira. That name. He'd seen it in that diary within the box when he first opened it.

"Who's Moira?"

"What?" the man asked suddenly, taking off his glasses. The man's eyes were strange - a fiery yellow, and oddly cat-like. He looked at the boy with a penetrating gaze that seemed to petrify him."

"I asked who's..."

"Don't play dumb, kid. I and the others have been looking for you for over ten years now. They all died, and I'm the only one alive! And now you're trying to play dumb?!" the man shouted.

"Look I don't know what the..." he was interrupted by the man's quick movement. He noticed the man was grabbing at the stick on his back, but he was faster. Within a second, he grabbed a knife from his waistband and threw it at the man.

"Die," he thought.

Suddenly he heard the sound of a loud metallic clash. Looking on, he saw the man, the cylindrical object in one hand, a longsword in the other., The blade of the longsword was lowing, and its handle was bandaged.

The stick on his back was a sword?

Looking at the ground, he saw his knife, cut in two.

"Such speed..." he murmured. "You intercepted the knife even when I threw it before you grabbed your sword,"

"That knife was aimed for the intercostal space where my heart was easily accessible. And it was thrown horizontally so it wouldn't get caught by my ribs," the man said, looking up at Alec. "You have great skill at throwing those knives. You learned well from Xander's manual, didn't you?"

Xander. Another name he'd seen.

"I'm sorry, but I don't know who you're talking about. I saw all those names within the book, and from the instructions in the box, I came here when I was 8. I have no idea how I got the box or who gave it to me, but apparently, diaries were left with the cookbook that my Grandmother left on the shelf. Diaries about a Xander and Moira. Who are they?"

The man smiled, putting his sword at his back once again.

"You don't know, do you?"

Alec nodded.

"They're your parents. They died trying to infiltrate Macrohard and end some of the projects he was working on,"

"What sort of projects?" Alec asked. Suddenly he noticed some black marks receding on the man's neck. He looked at the man's eyes and saw that they were glowing brighter than ever.

"The kind that involves fusing animal DNA with that of humans," the man answered, putting on his dark shades quickly.

Who was this guy?

"What's with the cylinder in your hand?" he asked, changing the subject.

"That's a storage canister. From your parents. Your mother especially. She worked on the contents."

A storage canister. Developed within the past fifteen years. Used to store large objects by disintegrating their molecules and storing them as binary codes. The objects could then be integrated upon opening the canister, which could only be opened by the right fingerprint.

"This requires a fingerprint," Alec said.

"Yes. Yours..."

Skeptical, he pressed his thumb on the scanner. Instantly, it buzzed and he dropped it. Soon, it hissed and popped open, and like a projector, it beamed some light at an area. Soon, particles gathered and a metallic backpack appeared.

It was very strange, having a strange mouth painting on its back and a few turbines underneath.

"What's this?"

"It's a special backpack. I don't understand how it works, because it was a top-secret project that your dad only mentioned to me once. Just like the canister, I think only you can operate it. It might respond to your DNA as well.

"So, I should put it on?"

"Obviously."

He put it on his back slowly. It was bulky and quite heavy. But as soon as it was on his back, it buzzed a bit.

"Sweat DNA analyzing," a computerized voice chimed. "Identity confirmed. Welcome, Alec Winters."

It began to buzz, and then it suddenly became a lot less heavy. Then he could feel it begin to attach to its skin.

"What the hell is this?"

"It's achieving symbiosis. Calm down!"

"What's this? Get out. Get out!" he said, wildly trying to drag the backpack off his back,. It had fused with his skin and was beginning to spread around his skin like armor.

He dragged out his knives and started throwing them wildly as the backpack fused completely with his body, spreading around completely to form armor. The mouth painting wrapped around to his chest.

The man looked at him, smiling.

"I'll be seeing you around, Alec," the man said, whipping out his sword. To Alec's surprise, he slashed at the barrier with it, and it disintegrated. As soon as the man walked through, the barrier came back up.

He found himself wondering what the sword was about just as he fainted.

DAY 4: RADIO

In the city lived a man, and his name was Gill Bates.

At the moment, Gill Bates was sitting at his big desk, receiving a shocking update.

"We have reason to believe Ace has made contact with Alec," his PA said shakily.

"What?"

"At the location in this file I just compiled," she said, handing it to him, "we've had some scouts monitoring him covertly."

"Flying Pigs with video cameras attached?"

"Yes."

"Ace managed to survive out of that five-man squad, and now he's found that boy. This is an issue I didn't want to have. An issue I wanted you to handle personally, Vanessa. You were so confident about the operatives you sent, and now they're all dead."

"I understand Sir. But you know, he's not..."

"I understand what Ace is," Bate said, smiling, "and I know it will be difficult to get him. But then there's the boy."

"What about him?" she asked, crossing her legs.

"While Ace might be a dangerous mercenary that no one will be able to stop, the boy's very vulnerable there. If we can kill him, that'll be the ned of Moira nad Xander's ambition."

"And the fulfillment of the vision which is called Nightshade."

"Exactly."

"But still, Ace might be around. He knows we could come attack there, and he must suspect that we know where he is."

"Which is why we must use a weapon very similar to Ace. Someone who can comfortably take him head-on

"You... you're not planning to use that, are you?"

"That's our only hope," Bates said, smiling.

"But he's... his methods..."

"He's a brute and one who can sync with Ace's fighting style. Let's go release him."

They took a walk to the elevator and then went to the subterranean level. And to the S-Level projects. There were only two test subjects here. Obe was Nightshade in a tank filled with saline and other liquids.

On the right was a room fro which loud hip-hop music was emanating. They looked through the glass and saw a man, his back against the wall, and his arms folded over his head as he nodded to the beats from his big, old radio on the ground. A plate of food and a drink was before him, but he didn't seem interested.

"Echo..." Vanessa whispered.

"In the flesh. Turn on the signal jammer and open the cell"

Her hands shaking, she turned on the signal jammer and watched as the music stopped playing. The man stirred suddenly.

"Open the cell."

She pressed the button and watched as the door hissed., gas coming out from the door a little. The man suddenly began screaming.

"The music! I need the music!"

"Kill her and you'll get the music," Bates said suddenly, pushing Vanessa into the room.

"Sir..."

"When you make a promise, you have to keep it. Doing otherwise has dire consequences, he said, watching as Echo ripped her head off her shoulders.

"Musiccccc!!" he screamed.

"There are two men out there. They don't want you to hear the music too," Bates said, handing him the pictures and the location Vanessa had given him.

"Must... kill... them."

"Good. Do that and you'll get your music back."

He watched as the man muscled out of the room.

"And, Echo?"

"Huh?"

"You can take the big hammer," Bates said.

Echo screamed in delight.
