Friends?

What does friendship really mean, and where should we draw the line?

I used to think I could - should and must - be able to do anything for my friends. A spur of the moment philosophy, if you'd call it. A friend is someone you should stand by, support, and look after, isn't it?

Well, that was what I thought anyway.

How far are you really willing to go for your friends? Once, my sister and one of her friends were out past 9 PM (against their better judgment) and they were robbed.

Well, one of them was anyway. Her phone was taken from her. As soon as two men jumped out of the bushes, my sister ran away. Now you can imagine my sister's anger when the story was revealed, and a lot of other girls shouted at her for running.

Like they expected her to stay there and stand the chance of being robbed and raped. Yeah, then she'd be respected because she was 'a good friend'.

It made me question what the limits of friendship are, and I've come to two conclusions:

  1. You should never have to experience all things that your friends are experiencing. You definitely shouldn't try to force your decisions to align with theirs, and neither should you force your life to work in tandem with theirs. No matter who that person is, you came into this world alone, and you're leaving it alone.

  2. You shouldn't condone your friends' wrongdoing. Only a fool would cover up for his/her diabetic friends who are secretly binge-eating sweets. Sometimes, turning your friends in or advising them against that decision would do them a lot of good.

Then again, it's just a freewrite from my point of view.

Device: Laptop

Timer: Phone Clock; 13 Minutes (I was very distracted).

Prompts: sweet, tandem, spur.

Each situation is different and the question is how we act if we are attacked. Will we stay and attack the attackers? Will we wet our pants or try to flee? No matter what we do if it comes to it we are on our own and have to deal with the situation alone. This has nothing to do with the question of how far friendship goes but with the personal instinct fight or flight.

That was the fact her friends refused to see. Adrenaline kicked in, that was all.
