The lines to the inside of the double side lines are the single sidelines play. the area between a doubles sideline and the nearest singles side line is called the Doubles Alley,which is considered playable in double play. The line that runs across the centre of a player's side of the court is called the Service Line.
The Line dividing the service line into two is called the Centre Line. The boxes which this centre line create are called the Service Boxes. The server must hit the ball into the appropriate box when serving. A ball is out if it has not dropped into the appropriate box or line upon its bounce. All the lines are required to be 51 in width.
The players stand on opposite side of the net. One player is the opposing player is the receiver. Service alternates between the two halves of the court. For each point the service starts behind the base line,between the centre mark and the side lines.
A legal serve start a rally in which the players alternate hitting the ball across the net. A legal return consists of a player hitting the ball once across the net before it has bounced twice or hit any fixtures except the net. The player that fails to make a legal return loses the point. In preparation for returning a service,the receiver stands a certain distance behind the service box line, close to the baseline. Service starts from the right court, thereafter the side from which service is made, alternate until the entire game has been played.
In double, serves alternate between teams and also between players, so that each individual player will serve every fourth game. A point is lost when a player lets ball bounce twice, drives it into the net,or hits it beyond the boundaries of the opposite side of the court.
If the ball strikes the line of the court, it is considered,in play. If after hitting the net a ball falls out of bounds on the opposite side of the court,it is considered, out. If the ball falls in bounds on the opposite court,it is considered,play. When a short is unsuccessful, the opponent scores a point.
