The inherent problem with NIGERIAN Feminism

Democracy, normally defined as a process by the people, for the people, and with the people. Before the coming of the Europeans into NIGERIA, NIGERIANS operated a Kingship system, more like the Britains.

With the advent of democracy, the monopoly system in which NIGERIANS have been used to have been infused into the so-called democracy we practice, hence it's a monopoly in disguise, where the president does himself as the overall head of the country and can do whatever he likes without the fear of repercussions.

With this in mind, you could understand why anything that NIGERIANS copies from the white man get infused with toxic traits that should have been long forgotten, hence breeding a hybrid and deadly version of whatever it is that they copied.

Feminism generally, could be seen as a movement made up mostly of women, but have also Male sympathizers, with the sole aim of liberating women from the shackles of gender slavery by preaching equality amongst genders. The movement has been around for ages and became a necessity because of the way women were treated years ago. It was believed that women had little or no rights when it came to politics and other important aspects of decision making in mankind, but that has changed over the years due to the uprising that we now refer to as Feminism.

So what does this means for women? This means equal opportunities, equal pay for the same jobs, more exposure, and holding of political offices.

The paradox of Feminism especially when it comes to the NIGERIAN version of the movement, could relate to the hate for men or Misandry. Some women have grown to hate men, some due to their past experiences with me. Who took advantage of them, while others just feel that to become a full-blown woman in society, you have to show your disgust for those who have allegedly kept you down; men.

While some of their fears and hate men are justifiable, as some men have indeed hurt such women, the dept of their hate has eaten up their reality so bad that they become the very thing they are fighting, oppressors. In this case, they tend to deny any opportunity to the male gender, claiming that it's "time" for Women to rise, hence ignoring the word equal opportunity, and making employments a gender-based favor.

While equality sounds like a good idea, it negates the fact that each gender has a specific role to play in society, especially in Nigeria, this could be called gender priorities. For instance, In the NIGERIAN contemporary society, a man is made the head of the family, and with this role, comes the responsibility of taking care of the needs of the family, which includes financial needs and well other burdens. The Feminist would argue that the man is not the head of the family, which is fine, but they wouldn't want to share the burden of taking care of the family especially financially, they still claim a man must take care of the family, yet he isn't the head of the house. In other words, separating duty from privilege.

Certain privileges also go freely with being a woman in Nigeria, but at a cost, the cost being that, especially in a marriage situation, that the woman ultimately answers to her husband. These privileges include;

1) Man paying a bride price to wife's family

2) man taking care of all the financial burdens of the family

3) man protecting the family and so on.

Of course, the price for all this is that the woman drops her family surname and behind to bear the husband's surname while she also bears children for him.

The NIGERIAN Feminist has decided that she does not want to drop her surname bro best children except she wants to, but still demands that the man pay her family bride price and also take care of the financial burden; trying to eat her cake and have it.

Notwithstanding, I believe Feminism is a good thing and has come to stay, but for it to have a headway on NIGERIAN society, especially with NIGERIAN women, they have to drop their sense of entitlement and privileges and embrace true equality.

Thanks.
