Government

There are many areas of our national life which compete for the scarce resources of government. Prominent among these areas are industrialization, transportation, agriculture,defence, maintenance of law and order, housing accommodation, education and health.

Government resources are not enough to adequate care of all these areas at the same time. This is why it is necessary to give priority attention to areas considered most important.

A careful examination of all government activities shows that the government has just one aim in view . The aim of government is to raise the material and spiritual standard of the people's living.In other words,the government is seeking the advancement of the citizens as well as the entire country as an entity.The best way to do this is to give priority attention to education and health. This means education and health should be given a lion's share of total government expenditures. There are several reasons why this should be so .

In the first place, all progress are brought about by human beings. Without man nothing will be accomplished on the entire earth's surface. Since man is the mover of all other factors he should be well educated so as to know how best to carry out his assignment or job.

The united state of America is greater than Nigeria today simply because the Americans are better educated than Nigerians. While the entire American population consists of people thoroughly trained in various specialist lines, more than 50% of the Nigerian population is made up of illiterates or semi_literates. Israel is great , not because of its natural resources but because of a highly educated citizenry.

Those who feel that priority should be given to industrialization or agriculture are blind advisers. Who will Man industry or who will handle agriculture? Are they not human beings? If they are not properly trained how will they become efficient engineers and technicians to handle industrialization? Or how will agriculture prosper if it is not manned ,by well educated personnel?

Therefore it is necessary first to give the people the right education. Then the people through their individual decisions will take proper care of industrialization, agriculture and commerce.

After education comes health. A well educated person cannot contribute to progress if he is sick. Therefore after the people have been given education their health should be adequately cared for.

If education and health is given earnest attention,there will be accelerated in the economic advancement in a country. This is not all. There will also be social and spiritual advancement. This is so because it is only the well educated that can appreciate and make proper use of the good things of life.
