Passing on Penakbet I haven't annoyed or insulted anyone in quite a while, so I figured it was time to rectify this lack of ambition on my part. And today is quite a good day to do it, as the power went out last night, and I woke up hot and sweaty. Why did I wake up hot and sweaty? Because my cold weather craving Filipina wife insists on cranking the A/C down to a ridiculous 20 degrees when we go to bed. This means that in order to be comfortable, I need to sleep under a quilt. In the Philippines! In the friggin' tropics! So I woke up last night, in the pitch dark, miserable and sweating under the quilt, next to an equally miserable wife, because the stupid power went out. (If we hadn't been under that quilt, we would have been fine; it rained hard last night, so the temps were mild and pleasant.) But this post isn't about my lack of sleep. It's about another Filipino food I hate, called Penakbet. There it is in all its gory glory in the attached pic. While there are some potentially yummy veggies in this mess, they are ruined by an awful tasting sauce that I can best describe as a strongly spoiled soy sauce, and the liberal addition of chunks of the parts of fish that no one outside of the Philippines eats. Okay, maybe you Brits would eat them. And maybe you Eastern Europeans? And you Chinese, yeah, you'd eat anything! In fact, I bet all you folks from places outside the USA, (with the possible exception of Canada), would eat all the weird bits of the fish that rightly belong in the trash. Ugh! Why did we Americans f@ck up America so bad that now I have to go live in places where they eat what should never be eaten? When we were still living in the USA, my wife would cook this slop, and she and her mama would happily eat it. I could force down two or three bites before I got disgusted, and went out to buy myself something else to eat. Every time she cooked it I would bitch and moan, and beg her not to make that nasty stuff again. So now we're in the Philippines. One of the challenges for an extremely spoiled brat American like me is finding food I like to eat. There is some very good lechon manok, (grilled chicken), around here, fantastic sweet-and-sour fish, and pretty decent pizza. But we're running out of money, so we're trying not to eat out as much. Plus recent stupid lock downs have closed all the restaurants. Guess what was for dinner last night! And guess what was served as leftovers for lunch today? My wife's sister did the cooking of the Penakbet this time, and it was every bit as bad as what my wife cooked back in America. After three traumatic bites I told my wife in no uncertain terms that I didn't eat that swill when we were in the USA, and I'd be damned if I was gonna eat it here! So I've been eating instant ramen noodles and cold cereal since. I wonder if Jollibee or McDonald's is open for take out?

This dish sounds like it belongs in my weightloss plan.
Yes! That would be an excellent use of Penakbet! This just goes to show that I wasn't looking at things correctly. Rather than get mad that I have to eat this swill again, I should be grateful that folks are concerned enough about my health to help me lose the extra weight I'm hauling around.
Exactly, it seems to me you have a very caring wife - give her a hug the next time she makes it, and feel loved as you feel the hunger.
