Manchester City hosted Borussia Monchengladbach in Budapest - the venue of the first leg, for their second leg tie to determine who goes through after winning the first leg encounter by two goals.
Manchester City wasted no time to register their intent for the game in the 6th minute when Cancelo's brilliant lofted pass found Foden in the box but his cheeky touch couldn't get past the goalkeeper as he was alert to keep that effort out. The goalkeeper did expertly well to still keep his side in the tie. If Foden had a better touch on the ball, he might have directed it well into the net.
Gladbach had their own chance in the 8th minute too when Embolo was played through. His shot got a deflection off John Stones and Ederson still did brilliantly well to ensure the safety of the ball for a corner kick. Manchester City got their goal in the 12th minute when Mahrez found Kevin De Bruyne at the edge of the box. He showed class and precision when he wonderfully struck the shot that rattled into the net from the underside of the crossbar. What a strike that was. He showed class and a good vision for that goal.
Manchester City doubled their lead in the 18th minute when Foden ran the length of the field only to play in Gundogan in the box. He wasted no time too as he guided the ball into the back of the net, beating the goalkeeper who rushed out, hoping to make it difficult, but the in-form Gundogan was having none of it and be made it 4-0 on the aggregate for City. Gladbach started playing for pride from this time onward.
Gladbach had a corner kick in the 56th minute and the ball came off Elvedi into the path of Hofmann who saw his effort away from the goal post. Wolf also had another chance in the 78th minute when he controlled the ball but his long-range strike went over the ball with no much threat for Ederson.
Mahrez was unable to produce his magic that he has been known for in the 89th minute when De Bruyne carefully dispatched his marker and ran towards the edge of the box only to find Mahrez but he skewed his effort wide. He repeated the same thing in the 92nd minute when he flashed another edge of the pass that he received wide. With the sort of form he has been in, he should have taken advantage of those chances.
Job did and City went through and there was no doubt as to if they deserved it because they played well and better.
