So back when I was in basic 3 I had a friend called Uchenna chukuemeka Daniel ..dark tall igbo boy from abia state, real smart, humble and cool .. Uchenna was in basic 3B I was in 3A and we were quite close friends.
Apart from the fact that we were kids and from the same ethic tribe, we were both top of our class so we had that in common ..we would would always meet during recess and just talk about tests or class drills or cartoons or toys . It was always fun and we were friends till I graduated basic school. You see Uchenna was my close friend because I admired his determination.. why ? You might want to ask I would share this short story with you
So we were in basic 3 when this incident occur .. my school usually gives us a week to prepare our mind and do some revisions with our teachers for better performance during exams . Uchenna and I had already agreed we weren’t going to play football that week. We were going to wait till exams were over before we could play our most loved sport and so we agreed to keep tabs on each other during school hours.
Unknown to me that Uchenna was playing football when he got home and kept on doing that till that faithful Sunday afternoon which would be the last day we had to revise as exams were to begin on Monday ..
Uchenna’s Mum had left for august meeting and had told him no to step outside or play football but because he felt he had already read to his satisfaction he ignored her warnings and went to play soccer around the street close to his house .. of course they quickly chose him to one of the best team he was quite a skillful player but some minutes into the game he was fouled by an opposing teammates he felt on the concrete block close to the where people sat to watch the match and broke his right arm .. like real life broke .. in fact people were to frightened by how the arm turned that they ran only one elderly man from the area quickly got to uche and just tried to straighten the arm before they rushed him to the hospital. He was in so much pain but they even said he passed out a couple of times but above all he was scared and not just because his mother had warned him but also he knew exams was starting tomorrow
What hand was he going to use to write the exams ?
Besides he was already in so much pain and discomfort, how was he going to take an exam in that state.
Anyways uchenna’s Mum called the school on Monday morning to inform them of what had happened . We were all shocked but more than that we felt sorry for him . Me in particular he was my closest friend and I thought for sure his grades were going to drop .. anyways after the day’s exam ended I went to visit him at the hospital not far from our school .. he seemed fine we spoke at length and I tried to encourage him, we laughed and just joked generally I left him feeling better sha and I was sure he was okay .. by Wednesday he was back to school and with the help of our teachers he was able to complete the exams - see he would tell the teacher the answer he wanted to pick and she would pick them for him - uche was grateful that he could finish the exams and above that his mum was proud of him because she said he was always trying to read as much as he could even on his sick bed. He asked that all his note was brought to the hospital so he could revise what we had done in school and I also helped him with some past questions.
Truly uche was really determined even tho he was in pain that never stopped him he kept on working hard with me. Sometimes I would fall asleep while we were revising and wake up seeing him still trying to understand some of the maths drill we did in class .. long story short our results came out
And yours faithfully was top of class 3A and uchenna surprisingly top of class 3B . His father was so surprised as to how he came through and did his best he bought him a new watch and a bicycle.. at the end of the day it was all good. His determination and hard work paid.
You know the popular saying “hard work and determination beats talent “ it is true .. anyways thanks for reading stay safe wear a mask stay determined work hard and pray
✌🏼 peace
So touching, I felt every bit of the story...hard work pays a lot.
Even at that point I myself would have given up, the best thing is everyone else supported him..good writing
