Philippines Leaving ICC

Few years ago, Former President Duterte revoke the membership of the Philippines from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC was established in July 2002 and it investigates and punishes people for their atrocities. Duterte’s decision may have an advantage but the Philippines and the Filipinos will miss the benefits of the ICC.

In my opinion, the advantage of revoking ICC membership will only be felt by individuals who did or will do crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes. They can escape the accountability of their atrocities, if not persecuted by their national justice system. Another thing, the ICC has its shortcomings but leaving does not actually became an advantage, unless the Philippines is a power nation. The said court lacks enforcement power, has low conviction rates, allegedly has bias and taking sides, and lacks resources, yet it is still improving. After all, it’s better to be a part of one than none.

Leaving the ICC is highly disadvantageous. If the judiciary branch of the Philippines didn’t investigate and punish individuals who commits war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity and even favored them, there were no last resort that will serve the justice. It’s bad for a country with weak and unfair justice system, just like ours. Also, it helps the victims of the said crimes around the world who demand justice and redress by punishing the oppressor and suspect and through the Trust Fund for Victims, to help rebuild their lives. Another, it protects the children and women who were prone to these crimes. Besides, the ICC strengthen the ties between countries as it mandated by international community,supported states and civil society, involves states in it’s governance, and it builds stable societies. The ICC also prevents the occurrence of these crimes in the first place by holding those who do these into account. If the country left this international court, the individuals especially politicians will likely to do these crimes especially if they have connections or control in judiciary system. Furthermore, ICC promotes global peace and order, a symbol of hope and stands for equality.
