One in five people may experience depression at some point. A survey conducted in Dhaka by the National Institute of Mental Health and the World Health Organization in Bangladesh found that more than 18 percent of children and adolescents suffer from depression. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2030, this depression is going to create a major socio-economic crisis in the world.

Researchers and physicians estimate that one in five people may or may not suffer from depression at some point in their life.

What exactly is depression?

Depression is considered an important mental health problem. Because if you don't pay proper attention to it at the beginning, it can create serious problems. Psychiatrist Muntasir Maruf says 15 percent of those with depression have a tendency to commit suicide.

However, many people understand depression to mean depression. Psychologist Dr Mekhla Sarkar tells the BBC that depression is a normal reaction of the human mind. A person's mind may be depressed due to non-fulfillment of expectations or any such reason.

According to the World Health Organization, depression is going to create a major socio-economic crisis in the world by 2030. "But whenever there is a disease, it is a little different. Depression can be of different levels or depths. Remember, if you are upset for two weeks in a row or do not enjoy the normal activities you used to enjoy, it should be considered as a sign of depression."

Dr. Muntasir Maruf says that any emotional change in a person has been going on for a long time and you should be careful when it is affecting your daily work.

What are the symptoms of depression?

The American Psychiatric Association cites nine symptoms of depression and says that if at least five of these are seen for two weeks or more in a row, it can lead to depression. These are:

  • Staying upset most of the day.

  • Loss of joy and interest in the work that you enjoy.

  • Sleep may be abnormally low or high.

  • Creating an aversion to food or increasing appetite.

  • Weight loss.

  • Slowing down at work and thinking.

  • In everything negative thinking about yourself or feeling responsible.

  • Decisionlessness or loss of concentration and when very intense suicidal thoughts and plans.

  • Depression is a disorder that is affecting more and more people.

Dr. Mekhla Sarkar says that the reaction can be in two ways, such as in case of sleep problems, someone may lose sleep, someone may sleep more, and someone may sleep without someone. "Again it is seen that sleep is happening but the energy that is supposed to come from sleep does not come to the body and the opposite is being felt. It can also be a sign of depression." He said that in many cases the taste of food changes. As a result, the food may increase, as well as decrease, but in all cases, the body weight is reduced in many cases. Someone gets fat again. "Depression makes you feel depressed. It seems that there is nothing good in front of you. Everything in yourself may seem negative. It doesn't seem to do anything good. That means self-confidence decreases. And all this affects his daily life."

Apart from this, the doctors also talk about some of the symptoms which include various physical symptoms, burning sensation in the hands and feet, feeling of hot washing out of the ears or severe headache and constipation. Mekhla Sarkar said that in fact, the feeling of life becomes difficult when one is afflicted with depression, which creates a tendency of suicide in a person gradually.

Is there a specific age for depression?

Dr. Mekhla Sarkar says that there is a possibility of depression at any age. "It is more common in adults. However, people of any age can be affected due to various environmental reasons." In the light of his experience working in a hospital at the district level, Dr. Muntasir Maruf says that many adults come to the hospital with various physical problems.

"But whenever I try to go into a little bit of detail, I see that there are no physical problems. The problem is that these are from mental and depression." However, children and adolescents are more likely to be affected by depression for various reasons. Many people suffer from this problem due to failure in love, so Mr. Maruf thinks that emotional support of children and teenagers is necessary in such cases.

Why do people suffer from depression?

According to psychologist Mekhla Sarkar, genetic defects are especially important among many factors. "Many people can suffer from depression due to genetic factors. Biological disorders need to be taken into consideration. In addition, there is a negative mental structure. Or the surrounding environment that he thinks is no longer going with him."

He said that if there is a break-up, divorce or illness in the family, there is a risk of depression. Again all is well around but still a person can suffer from depression due to various biological or underlying causes.

What is the way to overcome depression?

According to the Mekhla government, there are three types of depression - mild, minor or severe. "Mild depression goes away on its own. Again, sharing a little or increasing social interaction is helpful. That means not being isolated. Mixing with everyone. Staying with people you like. Staying away from people. It is possible to get up. " He says another characteristic of depression is the desire to wrap oneself up. "That's why we say to do physical work or exercise. A regular 30-minute walk is very good. If one can go out, it will also be beneficial to be able to walk around the house." He says the more physically active a person is, the more he or she will have problems.

"The most important thing is to be mentally strong and confident that I can. That is why I can focus on my positive things and practice good deeds." However, he said that he should seek the help of a doctor if his daily life, work or studies or family relations are deteriorating or if he feels that he is constantly recovering. According to him, depression is very curable so it should not be neglected. With the same opinion, Dr. Muntasir Maruf said that in case of depression, it is possible to overcome it easily if one can lead a life according to the advice of a doctor.
