The human body is composed of a bony structure or frame work called skeleton - the skeleton is divided into two (2) parts namely : the ENDO skeleton (i.e skeleton found inside the body) e.g skull, femur, wrists bones etc, and the EXO skeleton (i.e skeleton found outside the body) e.g teeth.
There are 4 types of teeth - incisors, canines, molars and premolars which vary in proportion from 20-32 ranging from childhood to adulthood. The teeth is made up of 3 layers - Enamel, which is the outer white and hard visible part of the teeth protecting the Dentine - which is the layer beneath the enamel and the Pulp - which is the centre containing nerve endings and blood vessels. The gum is another important fleshy part that attach the enamel and dentine.
Toothache from statistics is seen to occur in 60-90% of children causing absenteeism in school and over 100% adults. It occurs when the enamel thins or gum recession/shrinking occurs exposing the dentine. This can either be as a result of using very hard brush that wears down enamel, thus causing gum recession, activities which expose root surface such as eating sweet/sugary, acidic food/drinks as last thing to bed without properly rinsing/brushing the mouth, thus causing gum recession.
How To Stop Toothache
> Visit your dentist : He/she would advise you on the most suitable oral care routine and teeth brushing technique.
> Use toothpaste that is specially formulated for sensitive teeth e.g pepsodent, oral B etc
> Choose a soft bristle brush and change once in every 3months as well as dip in 100 degree centigrade water and salt to kill germs once in every month.
Importance Of Maintaining Oral Health
> For fresh breath against bad breath or mouth odour.
> For white teeth free from germs.
> Anti-Cavity : Fluoride-Calcium in paste protects teeth against cavities/holes, by strengthening enamel.
