I have intented to start a series of English grammar. New articles will be brought about grammatical forms that will help you to understand the grammatical system and make correct sentences.

In this regard,I begin the article with a very basic concept about the structure of a sentence.

  • Definition of a sentence: A group or combination of words that make complete sense(meaning) is called sentence.

Though, there are various parts of a sentence which will be discussed later in this piece, yet there are three main parts of a sentence which are as under:

A. Subject

B.Object

C. Verb

1. Subject: Subject is a part of a sentence which names the person or thing we are speaking about. It could be nouns as well as pronouns.

For example:

A. Suleman plays cricket.

Here 'Suleman' is noun that acts as a subject of the sentence.

B. He writes a letter.

Here 'he' works as a subject of the sentence.

2. Verb : A verb is a word that tells something about a person or thing.

For instance, 'plays' and 'writes' in the above sentences are verbs.

When only one verb is used in a sentence that will function as main verb as shown in the pictures.

Similarly, two verbs can also be used at times in a sentence. One acts as a main verb and the other acts as helping or auxiliary verb.

Note: when helping verb is used as a verb of a sentence that will work as a linking verb in the sentence.

3. Object : An obejct is that part of a sentence that receives action of a subject in that sentence.

There are two types of object ;such as, direct object and idirect object.

A direct object is the noun or pronoun receiving the action. It answers the question 'what?'.

An indirect object is the noun or pronoun affected by the action. It answers the question 'to whom?'.

  • 4. Predicate

Predicate is the part of a sentence which tells something about the subject of the sentence. For example,

1. Nature is the best physician.

2. John is writing a letter.

In the above examples, ' nature' and 'John' are the subjects of sentences 1 and 2, while 'is the best physician' and 'is writing a letter' and ' are predicates. They told us about subjects of the sentences.

  • Request : Errors and mistakes are expected, will be pleased if someone point them out.

  • Imp note: practice is the key to grammar.
