The word sovereignty in ordinary sense means independence, independent power, supreme authority that is subject to no other in a given country. It is the national right or power of independent rule sovereignty is a state of independence without subjection to any other authority. In Nigeria as in other countries operating a constitutional and democratic government, sovereign power resides in the people. Section 14(2)(a) of the 1999 constitution clearly provides that: Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria from whom government through this constitution derives all its powers and authority. In Nigeria the people are the sovereign and the people exercise sovereignty and sovereign power through constitution making, their electoral vote and by way of constitutional and Democratic government, It is rather unfortunate that in Nigeria we always claim to practice a Democratic system of government but in reality we practice tyranny and disobey the provisions of the constitution, our leaders always claim that they are the sovereign when truly sovereignty lies with the people. They rule us the way they like because no one can stand up to them, they abuse the powers given to them by the people and trample upon us like ants. The citizens are the sovereign in the country and they put you there to govern them well and attend to their needs so that's what you should do as leaders not trampling on us like us and governing us like its a military system of government. I pray that in the future our people come to realize that they are the sovereign in the country and not our leaders.
