Italian prosecutors investigating the theft of a giant wheel of Parmesan have charged 30 people over the crime.
The cheese, worth €35,000 ($45,000; £27,000), was stolen last month from a warehouse in the town of Bra. Police arrested 18 suspects on Friday and 12 more on Sunday, including the alleged ringleader Gianfranco Vissani.
Mr Vissani told authorities he had planned to sell the cheese to fund his political campaign for upcoming local elections. He said he was a candidate for the far-right Northern League party and had hoped to win votes by giving away free food. His lawyer told reporters he did not know that selling the cheese would be illegal.
About 440 kilograms (970 lbs) of Parmesan was swiped from a cold storage facility in late October. Two men were seen escaping with it in a car when they were caught by police near Bologna. The thieves tried to disguise themselves as truck drivers by covering their faces with scarves and woolly hats but they were caught after making several wrong turns during their getaway.
Personally, I would be a bit cheesed if 14 people managed to steal $35,000 dollars worth of cheese from me.
