Dark Tower-Part 4
As he rose above this tower, where other evils awaited in every nook and cranny, the dull beauty of the landscape below became more and more intertwined; The earth, mixed with a blue-tinged haze, resembled a calm sea, mountain ranges whose peaks glowed with the afternoon light seeping through the clouds, wet rocks, dark green moss-covered shores of carnivorous forests, and small white cloud clumps drifting beneath us, raging waves.
The flexible branches of the sharp-leaved plants, which had adapted to these heights and were now seen sporadically on the tower walls and on the roadsides, were throwing one after the other towards the road, responding to the sounds we made. After cutting one of these branches, which was rapidly reaching towards him, with his sword, which he swung at the right time, the person turned to Brendon and said, "Be careful, don't let the other half of your face get caught by these things." said.
“I have no intention of losing the rest of my face to anything.”Brendon replied, and then he said, “Thank God I still have a face that I can steal the hearts of beautiful women, even if it is half.” he added. Then he burst out a laugh that befits his humor.
Brendon still seemed to be laughing even after the laughter that spilled over the others one by two had died down, for at that moment the scarred part of his face was visible from where my horse was walking, and his lipless mouth, rows of teeth, and exposed cheekbones continued all the way down to his ear, which had become a small pink hole. this permanent cheerful expression had set in.
"I don't understand why you're in such a rush to remove the bandages from your face." said Shahset.
“Well!” Brendon replied wearily, pushing the air with the back of his hand, “I don't need those numbing ointments and suffocating bandages.”
Looking for a suitable place to lay its larvae, a large fly hovered in front of its hollow eye socket, while Brendon caught it in midair with one hand and crumbled in his palm. "Even though I lost an eye, my intuition and reflexes are still solid as steel." said.
"I hope so." Shahset replied, then “Get your bows ready! We are entering the territory of the Baraks.” he shouted, and his loud command caused the jagged plants around us to vibrate wildly.
The rustling of the leaves that hung down like the long fingers of malicious hands, turned into a deafening roar from these movements of sharp-edged leaves with pointed ends.
After a while, we realized that we had entered the territory of the barrack, when we began to see the standing poles with skulls on the sides of the road. Known for their poisoned arrows and perverted beliefs, this tribe sometimes went down to the lower parts of the tower to hunt primitives and wear clothes made from their skins. They carved some patterns and embroideries on their faces with bone knives.
The more disgusting the men were, the more beautiful the women were. They had repeatedly plagued those before us who tried to deliver the holy ark to the top of the tower. They would take the people they captured to their villages and place them in a cave, and they would wear a necklace made of skulls around the necks of these guests.
The necklaces consisted of six skulls, and one skull was subtracted from the necklace each day. The freshest meat was fed to the captives and the rarest drinks were given to them. In addition, the caves of these prisoners were visited by the most beautiful women of the village. During the time allotted to them, the captives wandered around the village as they wished, under the supervision of two savages.
When the day came when the last skull on the necklace was to be removed, the captives were brought to the village square, where a great fire was burning and the whole tribe gathered. After the flames of the burning fire subsided, the captive was tied tightly to a pole and turned over the embers. Death would be long and painful.
The meat, which was considered to be well fried, was cut into small pieces and shared equally among all the tribe members gathered around the fire. The aim here was to fulfill the necessity of a superstitious belief rather than to meet the need for food. An uningested enemy corpse was a stubborn spirit burning with the fire of vengeance. By sharing the flesh of the enemy, the tribe would have shared the honor of their success.
It was also believed that the eater would have the powers of the vanquished. Since the corpse was completely consumed, the vengeful spirit would also perish.
