Film and Television Studies refers to the academic discipline involved in the study of film, TV and cinema; from its production to its criticism. As a subject film & television studies is a fairly recent degree programme, given that the film industry has only thrived over the past 100 years. Initially, when films were produced and shown in 1880s, they were carnival-esque in style and were accompanied by full – scale orchestra’s as opposed to dialogue.
These days technology has advanced to such an extent that simple films and TV programmes can be made on a low budget with basic technology – even mobile phones. Directors are also increasingly able to showcase their creativity through the development of CGI and 3D camera technology. The possibilities are endless.
