History has been around for a really long time. In fact, the first known records of history were written in 3200 BC by Egyptians! That’s over 4000 years ago! And we still don’t know everything about it.
There are all sorts of interesting and fascinating facts that you might never hear anywhere else. Here are 10 of them:
1) The oldest mathematical proof that has ever been found dates back to about 1900 BC, when Egyptians used algebraic methods to calculate the pyramids' height!
2) The word "anecdote" is derived from two words: anekdota (meaning unpublished secret or personal memoirs), and dektos (meaning to publish). An anecdote is therefore something which was not published but only spoken of from mouth to mouth.
3) The earliest civilizations were centered around the “Fertile Crescent” which is a crescent shaped area that stretched from modern day Iraq to the Levant and Egypt, and down into Ethiopia.
4) The first known institutions for higher education were set up by the Shia Safavid dynasty in Persia at the beginning of the 16th century. Universities such as these later spread throughout Europe and became beacons of knowledge during the Middle Ages until one was founded at Oxford! There are now over 30 million students studying in universities across Iran today!
5) In a time before ovens or microwaves, people would slow roast bread inside fires, taking it out when they could hear it crackle, and was 1/3 its original size. This is how the word “to toast” came to mean something being cooked!
6) Charles Darwin did not invent the term "evolution". It had already been coined by British scientist Ethel Hedgman in 1858.
7) The word “history” comes from the Greek language and means “inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation”
8) In 1665, after 7 years of work on his theory of gravity, Isaac Newton sat down to write a letter detailing it all. He ended up writing over 100 pages before putting down his pen! It took him 3 months just to write out all the calculations in the margins of his journal!
9) Scientists have found evidence that suggests that when they dissected Egyptian mummies, it seems like many of them were still alive when they were buried. Some even had pencils stuck inside them after death!
10) The oldest known tattoos in the world are located at least 3500 years old and can be seen on the upper arms of women who died in Catalhoyuk (in modern Turkey). They may symbolize social status or religious beliefs.
