The fruit makes you fat. This misconception spread among athletes, some of them decided to remove it from their diet, the fruit is innocent!

Has someone ever told you that eating fruits will keep you from getting fit?

I know many of the athletes who excluded fruits completely from their diet plan, even made sure not to eat them for months before the competition, all because they feared that the fruits would limit the amount of fat they lose, or that it will increase their weight.

Where do such beliefs come from? The most important question: Are they correct?

What is a fruit?

Fruit is defined by botany as: the visible and fruitful part that grows from the ovary of a flowering plant, and it is usually characterized as sweet. As for vegetables, they are all other parts of the plant, such as the roots, leaves and stems.

In the context of talking about food, there are some plants that have spread that they are vegetables, while they are in fact fruits, such as eggplant and pepper, and there are some foods that share the characteristics of fruits and vegetables together, such as tomatoes.

In this article, I will use the word fruit to denote what comes to your mind usually when you hear that word, such as (berries, apples, papaya ... etc.), although if we follow the literal definition of the word fruit, avocado, cucumber and olives are also types of fruits, but It is not included in the framework of our conversation in this article.

See, where did the idea "fruit make you fat" come from?

The majority of those who believe that fruit causes obesity are followers of random science, or let us call it “so-and-so tell me,” which is, as the modern dictionary “Urban Dictionary” defines it, as: “The prevailing belief in the world of bodybuilding is that the opinions and experiences of bodybuilders are more reliable than research. Scientific ”

In this case, when you hear what other people are saying is generally a good thing, but you should know that genetically gifted bodybuilders (i.e. their bodies are better suited to burn fat and lose weight than others) often have reached this stage for this reason, and not because of their approach to nutrition.

There are those who believe that fructose (a type of sugar found in fruits) causes an increase in body fat, and some studies indicate that eating fructose leads to insulin resistance, raises the level of cholesterol in the blood and then increases the percentage of fat gain, especially in the abdominal area. In addition, fructose reduces the level of insulin infusion after a meal. This, in turn, reduces the level of proliferation of leptin, the hormone responsible for increasing the feeling of satiety, and increases the secretion of ghrelin, the hormone responsible for increasing hunger in the body. If this happens, it may cause an increase in caloric intake and thus fat gain. Several studies have shown that there is a relationship between drinking fructose-containing beverages (or processed corn syrup infused with fructose) and weight gain. However, there is a strong study that showed that the reason behind weight gain is the calories found in sugar in general, and not because of a specific type of sugar.

Fruits are lower in fructose than sweetened drinks. For example, one medium-sized apple contains 13 grams of fructose, and 90 calories. While roughly half a liter of cola contains 65 grams of sugar, nearly half of it is fructose, and 240 calories. (It is assumed that the calories are 260 calories based on the math, that each gram of sugar contains 4 calories. But I haven't found an explanation for this discrepancy yet.)

If fruits don't make you fat, then what causes obesity?

Excess calories are the reason behind weight gain. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight regardless of the source of those calories.

So the answer to the question: Do fruits make you fat? The answer is: If you eat too much of it (or anything else), you will gain weight. And if you eat high-calorie fruits like bananas, you are more likely to gain weight than low-calorie fruits like strawberries.

Fruit contains good nutrients, and contains a large amount of water, which makes you feel full after eating, and it also contains fiber. In conclusion, fruit is a very excellent option if you want a healthy source of carbohydrates.
