After the death of Shashanka, there was no competent ruler in Bengal. As a result, there was chaos and anarchy in this state. Each of the Feudalistic king jumped at the idea of becoming the king of Bengal. This anarchic period (7th-8th century) was termed as 'Matsyanyaya' in Pala regime.
The anarchic situation in Bengal came to an end in 656 AD with the emergence of the Pala kingdom. Today I will discuss about the Pala dynasty of Bengal. I will try to explain some information with the help of my two article.
Gopala (656-61 AD) :
Gopala was the first king of the Pala dynasty. The first dynastic rule in Bengal began during the reign of the Pala dynasty. The kings of the Pala dynasty ruled the country for four hundred consecutive years. No other dynasty had ruled this subcontinent for such a long time.
The kings of the Pala dynasty were Buddhists. Varendra was the homeland of the Pala kings.
Dharmapala (61-621 AD) :
The greatest king of the Pala dynasty was Dharmapala, the son of Gopala. Vikramshila was his title.
Dharmapala was succeeded by his son Devapala who further expanded the Pala empire.
Mahipala I (995-1043 AD) :
The oldest painting in Bengal was the 'Buddhist Anuchitra' of Nalanda Mahavihara painted on palm leaves during the reign of King Mahipala Dev during the Pala dynasty. Twelve colorful paintings in the manuscript of the Buddhist book 'Ashtasahsrika Prajnaparamita', painted on palm leaves in 963 AD by Mahipala I, were the oldest specimens of Bengali painting.
He was the son of eleventh king of Pala Dynasty, The second Bigrahapala and queen Mahidevi. Mahipala I was also known by Vinayakapala , Herambapala and Uttarapatha Swam.

শশাংকের মৃত্যুর পর বাংলায় কোন যোগ্য শাসক ছিলো না। ফলে রাজ্যে বিশৃঙখলা ও অরাজকতা দেখা দেয়। সামন্ত রাজারা প্রত্যেকেই বাংলার রাজা হওয়ার কল্পনায় অস্ত্র নিয়ে ঝাপিয়ে পড়তে থাকেন। এই অরাজকতাপূর্ন সময় ( ৭ম-৮ম শতক) পাল তাম্র শাসনে আখ্যায়িত করা হয়েছে 'মাৎস্যন্যায়' বলে।
৭৫৬ খ্রিস্টাব্দে বাংলার অরাজক পরিস্থিতির অবসান ঘটে পাল রাজত্বের উত্থানের মধ্য নিয়ে। আজ আলোচনা করবো বাংলার পাল বংশ সম্পর্কে। আমি ধারাবাহিক ভাবে দুইটা লেখার মাধ্যমে ব্যাখ্যা করার চেষ্টা করবো।
গোপাল (৭৫৬-৭৮১ খ্রিস্টাব্দ) :
পাল বংশের প্রথম রাজা ছিলেন গোপাল। বাংলায় প্রথম বংশানুক্রমিক শাসন শুরু হয় পাল বংশের রাজত্বকালে। পাল বংশের রাজারা একটানা চারশত বছর এদেশ শাসন করেছিলেন। এতো দীর্ঘ সময় আর কোন রাজবংশ এদেশে শাসন করেনি।
পাল বংশের রাজারা ছিলেন বৌদ্ধ ধর্মাবলম্বী। পাল রাজাদের পিতৃভূমি ছিলো বরেন্দ্র।
ধর্মপাল (৭৮১-৮২১ খ্রিস্টাব্দ) :
পাল রাজাদের মধ্যে সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ ছিলেন গোপালের পুত্র ধর্মপাল। বিক্রমশীল ছিলো তার উপাধি।
ধর্মপালের পর তার সুযোগ্য পুত্র দেবপাল পাল বংশকে আরো বিস্তৃত করেন।
প্রথম মহীপাল (৯৯৫-১০৪৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দ) :
বাংলার প্রাচীনতম চিত্রকলার নিদর্শন পাল আমলে রাজা মহীপাল দেব এর সময়ে তালপাতায় অংকিত নালন্দা মহাবিহারের 'বৌদ্ধ-অনুচিত্র'। প্রথম মহীপালের ৯৮৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দে তালপাতার উপরে চিত্রসম্বলিত বৌদ্ধ গ্রন্থ 'অষ্টসাহস্রিকা প্রজ্ঞাপারমিতা' পান্ডুলিপির বারোটি রঙিন চিত্র বংগীয় চিত্রকলার প্রাচীনতম নিদর্শন।
প্রথম মহীপাল ছিলেন পাল সাম্রাজ্যের একাদশতম সম্রাট দ্বিতীয় বিগ্রহপাল এবং রানী মহীদেবীর পুত্র।
পরবর্তী লেখায় আরো দুইজন পাল বংশের সম্রাট কে নিয়ে আলোচনা করবো। ভালো লাগলে সাথেই থাকবেন।
