Social Media and the Internet are tools.

Either you use them to your advantage, or be the one to be used.

Tools are used with a purpose. A scissor is used to cut. A watch is used to tell time.

Using the phone/laptop should also be purposeful. Once it's purpose has been accomplished, lay it off. You don't keep staring at the watch. You don't keep holding the scissor.

The problem is, we often use social media / internet without any purpose. You delude yourself thinking "Oh! I'm just gonna watch one video then I'll stop. But we do not stop at one video. We do not stop at one post. And before you know it, you've already spent 2 hours mindlessly scrolling or watching. Then you feel the regret that you've wasted your time (We've all been there).

Decide your reason / purpose whenever you are surfing the internet. They should serve you, and not the other way around.

I believe not in absolute abandonment of these tools but the proper management of time and evaluation of purpose.

Here are some practical solutions:

* Turn off notifications of unnecessary apps (mostly entertainment apps)

* Use [Distraction Free YouTube](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/df-tube-distraction-free/mjdepdfccjgcndkmemponafgioodelna?hl=en) chrome extension and disable the recommended videos.

* Limit your app usage into a set duration (30 minutes YouTube /day) and stick to it.

* Transfer your apps from your home screen to the app library. Reason: those shiny colorful icons serve as stimulus to trigger your monke brain to open it. (Use widgets instead)

TLDR: Use social media / internet with a PURPOSE in mind. They are tools that should SERVE you.
