A zoo is a public or private park for keeping animals alive for display, entertainment and research. In ancient times the wildlife and bird collections of China, Egypt and Rome were famous. By the end of the Middle Ages many rulers had private wildlife collections, which later became public exhibits. At present almost all major cities have animal sanctuaries. In this case, the notable trend of modern times is to breed endangered animals in captivity. Berlin Zoo: The Berlin Zoo is located in Germany and has 16,000 animals associated with it. The zoo was built to house the personal animals of King William IV of Prussia. Most of the animals were destroyed during World War II. The animals that exist today are the survivors of the surviving animals. This zoo is an interesting place in Berlin.
Singapore Zoo: The Singapore Zoo or Mandai Zoo is safely built in the forested basin of Singapore. Which is one of the most interesting zoos in the world. It is a natural habitat for animals. Their abode is surrounded by various barriers, trenches and glass through which visitors can see them safely.
Marble Palace Zoo: Raja Rajendra Mallick Bahadur established the Marble Palace Zoo at Chorbagan in Calcutta in 1854 which is still in the center of Calcutta. The king established it consciously and purposefully for the education and entertainment of the people. Raja Rajendra Mallick was a student of bio-history and the wildlife sanctuary of his residence contained many birds and mammals collected from different countries of the world including India. The zoo had a large collection of wildlife before it was opened to the public. Mallick Bahadur donated numerous animals to many organizations, including the London Zoo. He also donated many valuable animals to the Calcutta Zoo and that is why the first zoo there is named after him.
Alipore Zoo: Although the Barrackpore Wildlife Sanctuary was in operation, in the early 1841s, some people realized the need for a proper zoo in Calcutta. The Bengal government allotted 14 hectares of land in Alipore and the then Lt. The development of the zoo began with the interest of Governor Sir Richard Temple, with a grant of Rs. 5,000. By 185, a fairly wildlife sanctuary had sprung up, thanks to the spontaneous donations of several donors. Among the donors were Raja Suryakanta Acharya Chowdhury of Mymensingh, Nawab of Dhaka Khwaja Abdul Gani and Khwaja Ahsanullah Khan Bahadur. The then Prince of Wales, Emperor Edward VII, visited the zoo on 26 December 175 in the presence of the aristocracy of Calcutta and officially inaugurated the zoo on 1 January 18. However, it was opened on May 1, 18. Later, in 1956, a separate open space was created around the border for the tigers to roam to modernize the zoo. A freshwater fish aquarium was built at Alipore Zoo in 196, which now has about one and a half thousand fish of different species. In 1989, a separate infrastructure was set up to display different types of reptiles, crocodiles, etc. In 1975, two separate enclosures were built for bears and in 1999 for elephants, where they could roam freely.
Dhaka Zoo: Dhaka Zoo is the largest zoo in Bangladesh located at Mirpur. It is the national zoo of Bangladesh under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. It was established in 1950 as an animal exhibition on the premises of the High Court and was shifted to its present location in 1984. There are two lakes of 13 hectares in this area of about 75 hectares where innumerable migratory waterfowl gather in winter every year. The zoo has about 2,049 vertebrates of 150 species. Of these, 36 mammals of 54 species, 1219 birds of 60 species and 390 fish of ten species. Among the attractions for the visitors are 11 tigers, 16 lions, 7 hippos, 75 monkeys and 14 pythons. In addition to this there are some other rare animals like zebra, emu, jackal, black bear etc. which fascinate the visitors. Success has already been achieved in breeding tigers, lions, leopards, various species of monkeys and many species of birds under the captive animal breeding program here.
Beijing Zoo: Beijing Zoo is a zoological park in China. It is located on 220 acres and has lakes and ponds on 14 acres. The zoo and its aquarium have 14,500 animals, including 450 species of terrestrial animals and 500 species of aquatic animals. Every year, 80 million people visit the zoo's rare and endangered species.
National Zoological Gardens of South Africa: The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa are located in Pretoria, South Africa. It is one of the most beautiful zoos. Half of the zoo is flat and the other half is on a hillside. The river Apis flows through the zoo. There are 2 bridges and 1 cableway over the river.
Toronto Zoo: This Toronto Zoo is located in Ontario, Canada. The zoo covers an area of 610 acres and has 491 species of animals. A popular feature of this zoo is that it has animals from seven geogeographic regions - Indo-Malaya, Africa, America, Tundra Trek, Australasia, Eurasia and Canada.
Monarto Zoological Park: Monarto Zoological Park is located in South Australia. Which is an open sanctuary for animals. The zoo covers an area of 2460 acres. In terms of space, it is the largest zoo in the world. The zoo has many features to attract tourists such as cheetah habitat, white rhino habitat, giraffe herd etc.
San Diego Zoo: San Diego Zoo is located in Balbo Park, California, USA. It has created natural habitats for animals. There are 650 species and 3700 subspecies of animals. Some of the more famous zoos are London Zoo in UK, Wellington Zoo in New Zealand, Vienna Tier Garten Schombran in Austria, Anna Zoological Park in Oregon etc.
