Defination.
Is an organelle in the cytoplasm of all eukaryotic cell.The number of mitochondria in a cell is a variable and ranges one to ten thousnad depending upon the cells function.
Structure of mitochondrion.
It is a double membrance bound structure with an outer membrance stretched tightly around it and the inner membrance invaginating into the body of the mitochondrion as folds .These folds are named as cristae which increase the surface area within the mitochondrion .
Shape and size.
The shape of the mitochondrion may be spherical or cylindrical in the most of the anminls and plants cell.
Function of mitochondria.
The mitochondria is the center of the cells respiratory and metablolic activity where food is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water along with the production of energy in the from of ATP .
