In An Era That Is Completely Online, Can Conventional Media Survive?
Our world today has entered a rapid progress. This also has an impact on technological progress. Everything can be facilitated by the existence of technology, especially in communication and information.
The presence of the internet has made communication and information systems diverse. The era of digitalization has hit all over the world. Like it or not, the inhabitants of the earth must accept and adapt.
Media information is very important for everyone to get the things they need. Initially, information media was in the form of conventional media such as newspapers, television, and radio only. These three conventional media had their respective heydays before digitalization hit.
Now, many doubt the bulwark of the three conventional media. How not, nowadays many people access the internet to get the information they need.
The audiences of the three conventional media have accessed the internet on average. So that the decline in consumers from print, television, and radio is undeniable. Internet brings many positive things in terms of speed of access to communication and information.
Compared to conventional media, the convenience and speed of the internet has become the main attraction. In addition, the affordable cost and efficiency of new media are very convenient, in addition to the high mobility of the people. So it is not surprising that the millennial generation prefers to access information using the internet.
Print media such as newspapers, tabloids, and magazines are also experiencing the impact of the rise of the internet among the public. Print media, which became the primadonna in disseminating information in the 1990s, is now decreasing its audience. The presence of online news is a major factor in the movement of readers. Online news, which is fast and easy to obtain, is very popular with the public.
The cost and process of producing online media which is much cheaper and faster also adds to the long list of reasons the print media industry is threatened with bankruptcy. There is a lot of concern about the existence of conventional media, especially print media. Especially convergence is one way out that can be utilized by the media industry. Online news is indeed easier for readers.
However, the news that is usually in the form of "straight news" only conveys news at a glance by presenting important points from the content of the news. So that readers can dig deeper information through print media such as newspapers.
"So, what is the answer to the title above?"
From some of the explanations above, perhaps many parties are worried about the existence of conventional media in the midst of the spread of new media. But I myself have faith that conventional media will continue to survive.
This is based on the audience of the media itself. Every media has its market. The condition of society, especially in Indonesia, cannot be generalized. especially in terms of economy, conventional media will still exist in society.
Print media is considered more "credible" or trustworthy and minimal "hoaxes" because the process is quite long by going through several editing processes. The choice of media as a source of information also becomes a marker of one's education and thoughts.
Advertisers in print media are also wider than other media. From hotels, educational institutions, to middle-class shops, there are still many who flood advertisements in print media. It's no exaggeration if some of the things above strengthen the existence of print media from a business perspective. So is the radio.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, media consumers have experienced significant changes, especially television consumers. Both the audience and the duration of watching it, both experienced an increase. In addition to accessing the latest news and information regarding Covid 19, the policy of working and studying from home is also one of the triggers for the increase in television viewers.
Consumers will adjust the goods or services they need. As with cosmetics, users will choose which ones are appropriate and suitable for their skin. The media also has its own fans. Either because according to the needs, convenience, or other reasons.
Conventional media will still survive even if some have to go bankrupt, but that's not all. With media convergence, conventional media and new media will complement each other, not kill each other. What is in conventional media will be complemented in new media, and vice versa.
