English Grammar:

  • The word 'Grammar' is taken from Greek word 'Grammatikos' which means 'written letters/characters or a set of standard rules.

Definitions:

  • The term Grammar is used to assist us in expressing ideas or thoughts in proper and accurate ways.

  • The practical part of Language which deals with the functions, structures, usages and rules is called Grammar.

Some important terminologies:

1. Alphabet:

  •  A set of letters, symbols or characters that is arranged in a fixed order and is used for writing a language and representing the basic sound in speech is called Alphabet.

2. letters:

  • A character that represents one or more of the sounds in speech is called letter. 

  • Or 'Any of the symbols in English Alphabet is called letter.'

3. words:

  • It is a single unit of a language that has a meaning and can be written and spoken

  • Or 'A meaningful sound or combination of sounds that is the unit of a language and is made up of letters is called word.'

Kinds of words: 

There are two kinds of words namely: 

A. Grammatical words:

  • They are those words that are not self-explanatory or cannot be defined by one word.

  • Grammatical words need explanation.

Examples: Noun, Pronoun, and Gerund etc.

B. Dictionary words:

  • It is also called as absolute/ ordinary word.

  • They are those words that are self-explanatory or can be defined by one word.

  • Dictionary words do not need much explanation.

Examples: book, pencil, and table etc.

4. Phrase:

  • A group of words that does not have any subject and very but expresses a particular idea or meaning and forms a part of sentence is called Phrase.

Example: in the class, on the table, behind the shop etc.

  1. Sentence:

  • A group of words which has subject and verb, and always gives complete meaning.

Example: Steven is playing football. etc.
