If Bergman had made a slasher film, it might have been like this, because being black and white makes the scene more emotional, where there is no room for other distractions. This stylistic decision of the director has taken the movie to another level. Loneliness, trauma, antisociality from the exile lifestyle, arrogant behavior are the favorite subjects of modern horror film makers. If there is a touch of art house, it is not limited to horror.
However, the director may not have been able to show it in detail as it is his first film. Rather than show the usual bloodshed, violence of the horror film, sometimes just trying to highlight the horror through words. And, that's what I like most about the movie.
Any horror movie can be equally or more disturbing without showing real bloodshed, The Eyes of My Mother is proof of that.
Films on similar subjects from earlier days are more elaborate here, in which the arc of the main character is more beautifully portrayed. Maybe due to lack of budget, or he wanted to show his talent by showing so much in the 1st film.
If you want to see a foreign, unusual horror movie in the form of an art film, this film will not disappoint.
I wanted to see it again because of the cinematography and artistic performance.
