Scientists are closely studying the scent effect of pheromones, an external secretion similar to a hormone. These are used among some insects to attract others of the same species. In the hives, the queen received special food and grew up in a large cell. But what prevents other bees from developing the ability to lay eggs and become rival queens? Evidence suggests that the reigning queen secretes a pheromone that affects worker bees that smell or eat traces of it. This prevents the workers from maturing and regulates their ability to build queen cells. However, when the queen dies or leaves the hive to found a new colony, the scent of her pheromones disappears. The remaining bees soon begin to rebuild the queen cells to produce a replacement queen.
