According to the world population statistics, we are over 8 billion individuals in the world and if that does not make you feel small, how about we live in a small planet at the center of a small galaxy surrounded by more than 100 billion stars in an ever expansive infinite universe. You want to be more cynical? How about it’s highly unlikely that 150 years from now, it’s highly likely that no one will ever know that you existed? It hurts, contemplating the actually meaninglessness of human existence, the existential dread we all face in the daily trenches of adult life, thank God there is an alternative.
The alternative is awareness, it’s easier to assume that we don’t matter, personally I have been there and that road leads to hell (nihilism). Nihilism is hell on earth at least in some ways, its only consolation is that we avoid responsibility that everything that happens to us is because of fate and cruelty of other humans. Simple awareness shows us that we do matter, that our actions matter and we are responsible for how some (not all) things happen.
Awareness gives us responsibility, responsibility gives us the power to see and do things we are capable of to make things better. Let’s assume you know 100 people and your spouse knows 100 people, if you get into an argument with your spouse, he/she is likely to get mad and take it out on the 100 people she is close to which will piss of the people who are even more likely to get mad at others. So an unnecessary argument can lead to suffering of a maximum of 10 000 people in a single day, is that a small number? Do you see how important you are now?
