While the Muslim League made several mistakes one after another

1953 - While the Muslim League made several mistakes one after another, the Awami League led by Bhashani and Suhrawardi became more and more popular among the people of Eat Pakistan. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Shamsul Haque and many other leaders have been released from jail.

The first party council was held July 5th of this year. In that council Bhashani remains as the President and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is elected as the General Secretary of the party. Even though the new committee was elected unopposed, the General Secretary of the past Committee Shamsul Haque could not take it easily. Since then, Shamsul Haque goes behind the scenes slowly. At some point he loses mental balance. His wife Afia Begum left the country with her two daughters. This great organizer died alone probably in 1965. His grave was found by a journalist many years after.

Also, the council proposes to remove the word "Muslim" from its name. After much debate, it was left for President Maulana Bhashani’s decision. Finally, after many attempts, largely due to the efforts of Bhashani, in October 22nd 1955, the party name was changed from "East Pakistan Awami Muslim League" to "East Pakistan Awami League ". However 23 members of the party led by Abdus Salam Khan resigned from the party.

Meanwhile, almost inactive in politics Sher e Bangla AK Fazlul Haq attended many meetings during the birth of the Awami League. He showed interest to join the party in a meeting at Chandpur. Many people thought he would join AL. But he did not. At some point he took the job as the Advocate General of East Pakistan due to financial hardship.

Finally, the Government of Pakistan announced provincial general election to be held in 1954.

Sher e Bangla AK Fazlul Haq resigned from the position of Advocate General and forms his new party “Krishak Sromik Party” (Peasant Labor Party) on July 27th 1953.

A special council of Awami League was held in Mymensingh in order to discuss if a coalition can be formed for the upcoming elections. A decision was made to form a coalition with A K Fazlul Haw and some other parties. The council was presided by Abul Mansur Ahmed, then president of the Mymensingh District AL and also a popular author-journalist (later on Pakistan’s Federal Minister).
