The mass uprising of '69 was born through the Agartala conspiracy case of '78. However, before going into the context of the mass uprising of '69, it is necessary to discuss the context of that time.

Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, the beloved leader of Muslim Bengal, died in '72 after being away from politics for several years due to his age. Another martyr of Muslim Bengal, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy was still active in politics - in fact, in 62-63, Suhrawardy was the most influential and acceptable political figure in all of Pakistan.

But after Suhrawardy's death in '73, East Pakistan in particular became politically guardianless. Maulana Bhasani is still following the policy of 'Don't Disturb Ayub'. Although Khwaja Nazimuddin, Nurul Amin, Hamidul Haque Chowdhury are against Ayub, they do not have universal acceptance among the common people of East Bengal. In '74, Khwaja Nazimuddin also left the world.

After Suhrawardy's death in 1973, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the helm of the Awami League in politically unguarded East Pakistan - the young Sheikh Mujibur Rahman quickly became popular due to his extraordinary organizational strength, wide acceptance among the common people and strong personality. He was the only political leader in East Pakistan to show an uncompromising attitude towards West Pakistan - and so he became an eyesore to the West.

Ayub Khan's successor Monem Khan, the infamous governor of East Pakistan, publicly declared that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman should remain in prison as long as he was in power.

The Pakistanis had two motives behind the Agartala conspiracy case - firstly, to make Sheikh Mujibur Rahman unpopular by raising the flag of India and secondly to defeat him through his political rivals.

This time the second objective - then Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's main opponents in East Bengal politics were basically two - Ataur Rahman Khan (one of the founders of Awami League and former Chief Minister of East Pakistan) and Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani. But the ignorant Pakistanis also accused Ataur Rahman Khan's brother Khan Shamsur Rahman in this case - so naturally Ataur Rahman Khan sided with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On the other hand, although Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani left the Awami League in '56, he always loved Sheikh Mujibur Rahman like a son. So when he sees that preparations are underway to hang Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in this case -

he becomes agitated. On top of that, Bhasani was almost exiled in East Pakistani politics at the time - his party, the NAP, was divided - so he was determined to regain his lost glory through the anti-Ayub movement.

The Pakistanis wanted to hastily execute Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through the Agartala conspiracy case - but we'll see how their plan backfires soon.
