I was born when my mother Jackie was just 18 years old. She was then a high school student in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was not at all uncommon for a middle school teenager to become pregnant in 1984 in Albuquerque. It was a time of struggle for my mother. It was decided to expel him from school. Just then my grandfather came and stood beside my mother. After much deliberation, the principal said, ‘OK, he can go to school. But outside of the class, he will not be able to take part in any of the school's supportive learning activities or use any locker between class breaks. 'My grandfather agreed. This is how his mother finished her secondary education. Although the mother was not allowed on stage on the day of the convocation to receive the diploma certificate; But nothing could stop him from studying. After high school, my mother enrolled in a night school. Mother would selectively take courses that could accommodate the newborn. He had to go to class every night with two big bags. One bag contained books, the other diapers, a bottle of milk, and some toys to keep me busy.My father's name is Miguel. He adopted me when I was only 4 years old. Soon after the start of Castro's rule, his father came to the United States from Cuba at the age of 18 as part of Operation Pedro Pan. Dad had to come to America alone. His parents were afraid for the safety of his father's life. Their idea was that my father's life would be safe in America. So his mother made a jacket out of house cleaning cloth before sending him to America. Because, at that time, they could not afford more. That jacket is still hanging on the wall of the dining room of my parents' house. After arriving in the United States, my father had to spend two weeks in a refugee camp in Florida. From there he was sent to a Catholic monastery. He was fortunate to find a place in a Catholic mission at that time without knowing English. But his journey was very difficult. With strong will and perseverance a person can cross such a difficult path. My father received a special scholarship from a college in Albuquerque, where he first met my mother. Life gives us different kinds of gifts at different times. The best gift of my life is my mother and father. For me and my siblings, they are the only inspiration in life.
We learn more about life from our grandparents than from our parents. I was very lucky. Because every summer between the ages of 4 and 16, I would spend time with my grandparents on their farm in Texas. Nana was in government service and a farmer. He was a very self-reliant and self-sufficient man. When someone is in danger in a remote area, he can pick up the phone and ask for help. The solution is to find out for yourself. As a kid, I used to watch my grandfather solve all sorts of problems one day. One day I would see a soil lifting crane being repaired, another day I would see a veterinarian taking care of his own farm animals. I have learned from him that if you want, you can solve the most difficult problems by yourself. Pushing gives you the urge to try again, discovering new ways to turn around; Not if you stop.
