What will surrender be? A state of mind, fully comfortable, without fear, anxiety, burden, or problem, where you are truly at ease. Surrender is called the condition. Surrender is our very nature; it doesn't have to be done by you. You are already in a state of submission because you are in your normal state of childlike innocence. If you can't surrender, so you make an effort, and you surrender by effort.
Letting go of power is the first big element of successful leadership. When you're sleeping or when you dream, are you in control? No!-No! Are you in charge of all other bodily functions? Your heart pumps all by itself. Your liver operates by itself. The food you stuff in your stomach is all digested on its own. Have you got some control over them? Are you in charge of the globe going around the Sun and Moon, or even of the globe revolving on itself? Do you have some power over the thoughts that come into your head? So when you know that you don't really have much power over all the big things that happen in your life, you're going to stand up and laugh. Oh, what am I thinking, do I have anything to control? "Then you will know that an illusion is a belief that you are in control. And you relax, then. And surrender is called the relaxed state.
So when you say, "I can't relax," I'm going to say, "Okay, hold your fist tight, tight." Then when I ask you to tighten it and you can't do that, what are you doing? Tired, you just drop out. This with effort comes to the other end! It is also necessary for a leader to be in the current moment, too.
So what are the characteristics of good management? How would you be a leader who is dynamic, optimistic, and enthusiastic? Setting an example is the first attribute of leadership. A leader does not just order stuff; he does so so that it can be achieved by others. The second factor is that a leader takes great care of those he leads. Thirdly, he does not build fans. A strong leader builds leaders. And then movement in the chain occurs. Liability should be assigned by a leader.
The fourth quality is that authority does not rely on a chief. He just does one thing, whether or not power is invested. It's coming by itself. The fifth characteristic of management is that he is not concerned about the role. The esteem you receive by virtue is very different from the respect you gain by virtue. The appreciation you earn from a role is fleeting and short-lived. But the love you earn only because of your smile, your personality, your virtues, is always there with you.
You may be the chairman of this committee, the chairman of that committee, whether you are the barrister here or the state's governor, both of which are temporary, temporary. They're coming and they're going. And because of this position, the respect you get is not sincere, it is not from the heart, it is not real. But because you're a good guy, the appreciation you receive is real, and it lasts a long time. Spontaneous, it is.
The sixth quality is that a leader is alert and isn't distracted when challenges arrive. A successful leader is one who, as challenges arise, does not drop stuff. A good leader's seventh attribute is one who does not care about comfort, but who spreads itself outside the comfort zone. Only when you stretch outside your comfort zone, where we are always hit, can something imaginative, dynamic, and great happen. We think there's something we can't do just make an effort and take a step forward and you'll find that you're widening your comfort zone. Or, your imagination comes into play when you step beyond the comfort zone.
The eighth factor is that the head and heart should not be mixed by a chief. You're in a mess if you mix head and heart! You work with determination when you have to work, and you live with your brain. In life, listen to your heart in circumstances other than when you are working.
A good leader's ninth attribute is that he can be multidimensional and see from the other's point of view. Put yourself in the shoes of another person, looking from the point of view of the other person. The tenth aspect is that one-sided data is not based on the leader. When you get any news from one side, before you hear from the other side, don't make any decisions or conclusions. A successful communicator should be a leader.
The eleventh is that there should be a straightforward approach by a leader. A good leader's 12th attribute is not to judge oneself. You have this propensity to judge, "Am I good?" "I'm no good." Self-judgment is a hindrance. Stop doing it. Don't make your own judgment. You are still judging others as you judge yourself. You oscillate like a pendulum then. If you feel that you're good, then you say others aren't that good. So you blame yourself because you find out others are good, and then you feel that you are not good. Judgment is somewhat close to accusing others and self-blaming. We've got to get out of this vicious self-judgment circle. That is the state of surrender as well. That means you no longer judge yourself when you have surrendered to the Divine. Self-judgment is not imperative. A kid is so innocent, why? Because the child is not judging herself.
