The definition of "romanticism" first appeared in 1798. The first to use romanticism in their works were German writers.

In the 18th century, the word "romanticism" meant something non-standard, even fantastic. This word conveyed the essence of a new era.

Due to the publicist nature of the Enlightenment, romanticism quickly gained popularity and soon spread to Europe and America. The authors began to focus on feelings. The works of writers became more sentimental, classicism faded into the background. Now the fundamental goal is to convey emotions to the reader, to express the inner world of the characters. Romanticism mixed history, folklife, legends, disappointment society, and the writers themselves. Of course, one should not forget about emotional love experiences, which soon became the basis of romanticism.

Romanticism is distinguished according to the degree of confirmation of the spiritual and moral values of a person. If the work traces the struggle against pragmatism and materialism, praises human nature, and reveals the characters of the characters - you can be sure that this is romanticism.

You can structure all the signs of romanticism in the following list:

  • The cult of personality. The main classic plot of romanticism can be considered the conflict of one person and society. The individual differs from society, stands out, and, as a result, does not get along with people. Another example is the romantic duality of being. The world seen by the character and society is one, but the views are completely different. The hero often suffers greatly when he has to return to reality. In romanticism, high feelings, passion, mental agony, ideals are important.

  • High and low feelings. The opposition of love, anger, and ambition.

  •  Nature is often used as an expression of the general atmosphere, emotions, and feelings of the characters, sometimes in a negative sense. For example, to compare bad weather with the troubles that a person is struggling with. It can be the sea, mountains, or a pronounced element.

  • The real and ideal world are constantly being compared. Reality is boring, and the imaginary world is bright and unattainable of romanticism :

Characters of Romanticism :

The main characters in this stylistic trend are mostly romantics. Each individual is not just a piece on the "chessboard", but a Personality with a capital letter. The hero opposes society and the dark, gross reality. A "superfluous" person for society is a classic image of romanticism. Sometimes the authors portrayed a resident not urban and lonely, but free and self-sufficient. For example, a savage who does not know the benefits of civilizations, but is happy with it. Such heroes were inherent in naivety, simplicity, good-nature. The third image of romanticism is a violent, opposing, unbroken rebel. Can sometimes be an antihero.

In romanticism, as in drama, the ending of the protagonists is usually sad. A lonely person remains a loner, a savage dies, and an antihero becomes a cog in the system.

Romanticism gave a very strong impetus to the development of literature. Due to its rapid spread, new genres began to appear.
Thanks to romanticism, several subgenres have appeared:

• short story;

• novel

• idyll

• ballad

• fantastic story

• Clyro

• historical novel

• lyric poem

The most widespread genre in romanticism is the short story. However, despite the prevalence of short stories, the greatest sensation in society was made by the historical novel, the founder of which was Walter Scott. The main feature of his works were medieval plots, references to historical events, emphasizing the life of the common people and their customs. Epochromanticism was also marked by the emergence of numerous fairy tales. Many authors of this direction are still known.

For romanticism, the following characteristic artistic features are very typical:

  • Transformation of reality. Caricature happinesskindness, and innocence versus everything negative. Often, romanticism is mixed with notes of mysticism. One should not expect realism in such a book.
The impossible plot in reality: implausible salvation of the protagonist, catastrophe, accidents that are impossible to believe, and much more.

  • Hyperbole is often used in romanticism.

  • Whipping up the atmosphere, mystery. Some things may not be explained at all, leaving the reader with a lot of questions and misunderstandings

  • 5. Lack of specificity. There is no black and white, there is notably bad or good.

  • 6. Stylistic preventive business, the color of the text, many details, and lyrical digressions. Several numbers of literary techniques are used: phraseological units, metaphors, verbosity.
