Most of what lies in front of you are caused by boredom.
The reason why I would like to speak with you about boredom today in this high meeting is that I believe, no liberal arts college prepares you for possible boredom. Neither the humanities nor the natural sciences offer boredom courses. At best, they can acquaint you with the sensation that she brings with her. But what is the cause of this incurable disease? The worst kind of monotonous humming from a church pulpit or a textbook written in high-flown English is nothing compared to the mental Sugar, which starts right in your bedroom and stretches beyond the horizon.
Known under several pseudonyms - suffering, inner emptiness, longing, blues, melancholy, dullness, apathy, indifference, phlegmatic, lethargy, sadness, etc. - boredom is a complex phenomenon and, in general, the result of repeating something the same. It may seem, then, that the best remedy for boredom is unremitting ingenuity and originality. This is exactly what you, young and newfangled people, are pinning their hopes on. Alas, life will not support your opinion, since the living environment is for the most part nothing more than repetition. One could, of course, argue that the constant pursuit of originality and innovation is the engine of progress and - continuing in the same spirit - civilization. However, as far as we can look into the past, this endeavor is not all that helpful.
For if we measure the history of the human race with scientific discoveries, ignoring new ethical concepts, the result will not be too impressive. We find, formally speaking, centuries of boredom. The very notion of originality or innovation reveals the monotony of the everyday reality of life. Another problem with originality and innovation is how we pay for them. With these qualities, you will become wealthy too quickly. And most of you know first-hand that no one gets bored like the rich - for money buys them time, and time is repetitive.
Assuming that you are not striving for poverty, you can expect to be bored with boredom as soon as you reap the first fruits of wealth. Thanks to modern technology, these fruits are as countless as the manifestations of boredom. In light of their purpose - to make you forget about excess time - their abundance is revealed. As for the poor, boredom is the most brutal aspect of their poverty, and getting rid of it requires more radical measures: violence or drug addiction. Both provide only temporary relief, while the misery of poverty is endless; both misery and poverty, due to this infinity, are dear. In general, the person who injects heroin into his vein does it for the same reason you buy a videotape: to get rid of extra time. Although the difference is that he spends more than he has and that his means of escape allow him to disappear 1 before your funds - you.
In general, the difference between touching the syringe needle and the stereo button roughly corresponds to the difference between the impact of time on the have-nots and the persistence of its impact on the haves. But, whether you are rich or poor, you will inevitably become worried about monotony. Accordingly, you will try to invent a way to escape. In addition to the means for relieving boredom, which I mentioned above, you can decide to change your job, place of residence, company, country, climate; you can resort to promiscuous relationships, to alcohol, to travel, to cooking, to study, to drugs, to psychoanalysis.
