Intro

This is part three of a series of articles in which I share what I’ve learned from writing on Medium. I try to provide as much value as I can with no fluff. Hopefully, this is useful for you!

If you just got here you can find part one of the series here:

Essential Reading For New Medium Writers

In this part of the series, I will be talking about the ways you can get more readers for your stories. I will share my experience and even some fun experiments.

Remember:

To be successful you need a dedicated audience. Not just people who click on your articles and then immediately click away.

Preparation

No matter how much you promote your story, you won’t get good results if the title will not be good. Before choosing a title think to yourself. Would you click on your title if you saw it somewhere? Does it address an important issue? Does it promise a solution to a problem?

Find a photo that fits your title and the contents of your article. Don’t pick the first stock photo you find. Some of the stock photos are overused. If you choose something fresh, you have a better chance of catching attention.

I primarily use two platforms for images in my articles.

Pexels

It’s a site that offers thousands of free-to-use high-quality images and even videos. Just don’t forget to credit the author.

Midjourney

This is a tool that lets you turn text into images. It’s powered by artificial intelligence and works like a charm. Here’s how you can get started with Midjourney AI:

Work hard on the introduction.

A strong opening is crucial. If you don’t catch the attention of the readers in the first couple of sentences there is a high likelihood that they won’t read further.

The best way to get more readers to read your work is to write something that they actually want to read. If people like what you’ve written your article will get picked up by the algorithm. But there are some things you can do to increase the number of readers.

Promotion

As creators, we need to think as marketers to succeed. There are several ways to get more attention to our stories.

Here are some tips you should follow to succeed on Medium.

1. Interact with other writers on Medium.

Read the work of others. Clap. Comment. Be meaningful. When you interact with others in a meaningful way they are more likely to care about your existence.

Leave a trace. Share your views and opinions. Other people leave comments too. And your opinions might intrigue them. Use all the opportunities you get to leave your digital footprints. Build trails that lead to your work.

But don’t spam. Be sincere. There is a lot. And I mean a LOT of content out there on the internet. Why would someone read some generic message and be intrigued by it? Stay true.

2. Use publications

Medium has an in-built feature for publications. And some of these publications can have quite large audiences. But even smaller publications with more engaged audiences are great.

Submit your stories to publications. But make sure that the topics you cover along with the message of the publication.

I recently submitted a story to # The Side Hustle Club publication and it got featured in their newsletter which brought in quite a good traffic.

I will go more in-depth on publications in the next article of the series.

3. Social media

If you have an existing audience it’s a no-brainer. Share your work with them. Find creative ways to tell about your passion for writing.

But if you don’t. Start growing your presence.

Get on Twitter. Start a Facebook page. A Pinterest account. You don’t have to focus on these too much. But have them they will generate leads. Once you have more free time look more into one of the platforms.

Twitter is really useful for writers. Here’s a great article from Dean James on the topic:

Why It Makes Perfect Sense To Also Use Twitter If You’re Writing .

Use Reddit and Facebook groups

Share your work on topic-related groups or subreddits. Answer questions with your articles and link them. If you are good, people will organically share your work.

4. Use other platforms

You can post your writing on other platforms. And promote Medium there. If there are other writers, they might like Medium.

Start a YouTube channel, a TikTok. Build a network of content. Weave a web of your creations that lead from one to the other. Get the snowball rolling. The more places there are to find you, the more likely someone will.

5. Experiment

Don’t be afraid to try something out of the ordinary. I can’t give you exact directions for this one. But there must be plenty of unusual and unexplored ways to attract an audience. If you get a crazy idea. Go for it.

The World Belongs To Those Crazy Enough To Take It

Here’s a fun experiment I did:

I Paid Someone on Fiverr to Promote My Medium Article So You Don’t Have to Here Are The Results

I didn’t expect the Fiverr promotion to work. But I did expect that an article like this will basically promote itself. And it Did.

6. Grow a mailing list

I can’t stress this enough. A mailing list is your most valuable asset as a creator. Start working on a mailing list early. You can get de-platformed, banned from platforms, etc. But your mailing list is yours. Here are some tips on this:

How Medium Pros Grow Their Mailing Lists

To be continued

In the next part, I will be covering these topics, stay tuned.

Have you been writing on Medium for some time? Don't shoot for the largest publications right from the start. Get your stories into some smaller ones. Read submission guidelines. Follow the rules. Larger publications like The Startup take their guidelines seriously. And they will be also looking into what you have already published. And it might also take a while until they get back to you as they receive many drafts every day.

But it surely is doable.
