Jamuna River

Jamuna River The Brahmaputra-Jamuna is the second longest river in Bangladesh. And one of the longest rivers in the world. It’s basin covers the territories of Tibet, China, India and Bangladesh. Actually the lower stream of Brahmaputra river is called Jamuna. As a result of earthquakes and severe floods that occurred between 1782 and 1787, the current course of the Brahmaputra was changed and the current Jamuna river was created.

At Bahadurabad in Dewanganj Upazila of Jamalpur District, the Brahmaputra River changes its old course and flows southwards as the Jamuna River and joins the Ganges River at Aricha. As a result of the withdrawal of flow, the old course of the south-easterly Brahmaputra narrowed and still flows as the Old Brahmaputra. The hydrology department of Bangladesh Water Development Board calls the current entire flow of Brahmaputra as Brahmaputra-Jamuna.

The Brahmaputra originates from the Chemayung-dung glacier (31°30'N and 80°20'E), 145 km from the important trading center of Parkha, between Lake Manas and Mount Kailash in Tibet. The Brahmaputra river in Assam is known as Dihang before flowing into the vast Bengal plains. It enters Bangladesh through Kurigram district. The combined length of the Sangpo-Brahmaputra-Jamuna to the east of its confluence with the Ganges is about 2,700 km. The length of the Brahmaputra-Yamuna river in Bangladesh is 276 km, of which the length of the Yamuna river is 205 km.

The width of the river ranges from 3 km to 20 km, but its average width is about 10 km. The width of Jamuna is never less than 5 km in monsoon season. Jamuna is actually a Charotpadi river. The Jamuna River consists of channels of various shapes and patterns ranging from hundreds of meters to several km in width, and with various patterns such as braids, spirals etc.

Most of the course of the Jamuna in Bangladesh has developed numerous embankments which are submerged during the monsoon season, turning the river into a single channel. Thus the river has become one of the most important rivers in the world due to its breadth alone. The width to depth ratio of the individual tributaries of the Brahmaputra varies from 50:1 to 500:1. In Bangladesh the river has a minimum level of 0.000077, which decreases to 0.00005 near its confluence with the Ganges.
