Learning Management System (LMS) is one of the most used tool in teaching in the new normal. It enables interaction between the students and the teacher. It transforms all your actual activities in the class into an electronic and online way. For almost a year of using LMS I experienced benefits which include but not limited to the following:
Easy way of tracking student performance.
Organize way of uploading lessons to students.
Convenient feedback mechanism for student outputs.
Automated checking of multiple and fill in the blanks quizzes.
There are different LMS available but it has the following common capabilities for both students and faculty:
Class Creation. The faculty can make a class/course. It is just like transforming the physical class in the platform. When class is created, teachers can enroll students to the class or the students can do self enrolment through a class key. The class list/class record will be automatically generated once students have been added.
Content Management. The faculty can upload lessons and other resource materials such as videos. images and books through the LMS. The students on their side can make view and download the lessons uploaded by the faculty.
Examination and Quiz Administration. The faculty can create quizzes, assignments and examinations. Set the schedule, the score and the type of submissions a student can submit. The students can see the assignments and will be reminded of the deadlines.
Grading Module. This is the feature that allows the faculty to give ratings to the students. The faculty can also give feedbacks for the submissions. The students can see the graded assignments and read the feedbacks given by the their instructor.
Communication Feature. This feature allows messaging between the faculty and the students. Through the messages concerns of the students can be raised to the faculty and the faculty could give a response. It could be in the form of chat or messaging.
Notification Feature. The students and faculty are notified of the incoming submissions. The teacher is notified of how many students have submitted and are ready for grading.
What are the Examples of LMS?
There are many Learning Management Systems available some are FREE and some are paid with subscription. Here are some of the FREE LMS that I have tried already .
These LMS have the capabilities enumerated above but they differ in terms of implementation as well as the ease of use for the faculty and students. Among the three, I love to use the Canvas Free for Teachers because it is easy to use, have simple design but has powerful capabilities that one can easily follow through.
What we do for the implementation?
As IT faculty, it is our tasks to train people on how to use LMS. We share to our colleagues on what are its capabilities and how to use it. We also make videos and tutorials for the students to follow. In this time, it is really a must to share best practices for the good of our students.
CONCLUSION
Learning Management System enables interaction between the learner and the faculty. It transforms the usual face-to-face class into an online platform. There are different LMS available you just have to decide which suits you best and also budget is considered. Whatever tool educators might use, the most important is we are doing this for the student's learning.
