Happy Forest Kids is another after-school care program which operates the same with Happy Fish Kids, only that, the recipients are from a community that is near the forest. Last December 7-9, 2021, the BSIT program of our institution conducted a Digital Literacy Training to Highschool student recipients of HFK. The training is in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Davao Oriental. It aims to provide the students the basic knowledge and appreciation on computer operations, word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. The trainers for the activity were the DICT personnel and our program assisted in the training.
The mode of the training was demonstrative and hands-on. DICT brought some laptops that the students could use. They will demonstrate the ways on how to do tasks in MS Word and the students will have their time to follow. Since the computer units were just few and participants are many in number, they shared in one computer. They were very eager to learn how to change fonts, color and size, insert pictures, use wordart, make animations in presentation.
They were also given time to present their outputs. You can see the joy they have everytime they were able to complete a task. The trainer will also roam around to see and check the tasks that they were doing.
In the closing program, the participants were able to give their learning insights about the training. They were thankful that they given the opportunity to learn about the basics of computer. They were also looking forward for more trainings for them. They were given sweet treats and school supplies for them to use in their modules. Certificate of completions were also given to the participants.
We as facilitators were very happy to see the eagerness of the students to learn. It inspires us to go back to the community and train people to be computer literate. It is our advocacy to help people to be computer literate and that they could use in the future for their education or even in employment.
This activity would not be successful without the collaboration of DICT and Davao Oriental State University. Extension activities with strong collaborations are really encouraged to foster partnership and counter parting in terms of funds and resources. Also, the participation of the faculty members were very appreciated in the activity. Without them as the assistants and facilitators, the activity would not be successful.
