Medicinal plants in the Philippines
Garlic
Not only is it a delicious food, garlic is also a plant that can cure various ailments.
According to the study, garlic is effective against bacteria such as Salmonella and E.coli. It is also considered a drug in multi-drug resistant tuberculosis.
It is also effective against colds, sinuses, congestion and diarrhea. There are also studies that say that eating it regularly lowers blood pressure.
To use it as an herbal medicine, eat one or two grains daily.
2. Honey
From time immemorial, honey has been used as a remedy for wounds and for the prevention of infections.
A 2016 study also found it to be effective in treating chronic wounds, burns, ulcers, bedsore and skin grafts. According to a 2011 study, honey is able to control the growth of 60 kinds of bacteria due to its antibacterial properties.
It treats wounds by applying a protective coating against bacteria. Aside from healing the wounds quickly, it is also an effective remedy for sore throat, gastric ulcers, digestive disorders, cough and skin problems such as acne.
But it should be noted that it is not safe to give honey to babies one year of age or less.
For use as a medicinal plant, it can be taken or mixed with tea or food. To treat the wound, it can be applied directly to the affected part of the body.
3. Ginger
Ginger is also an effective herbal remedy for ailments. It is considered by the scientific community as a natural antibiotic.
A 2017 study demonstrated and demonstrated the ability of ginger to fight many strains of bacteria. Studies are also being conducted to prove its effectiveness in relieving seasickness, nausea, upset stomach and lowering blood sugar levels.
Ginger is also an effective remedy for colds and flu. To use as a medicinal herb, boil crushed ginger in two cups of water and drink daily.
4. Oregano
Another herbal medicine that is believed to cure cough in the elderly is oregano.
Oregano has anti-inflammatory properties and is also an antioxidant. Others say that oregano helps strengthen our immune system.
Although these have not been proven, some studies say that oregano is an effective form of natural antibiotics especially if it is made into oil.
Apart from the oil form, oregano can be used as a medicinal plant by drinking the juice from its dried leaves mixed with warm water.
5. Catnip
Catnip is also a medicinal plant found only in our yard. It is believed to cure an upset stomach, relieve anxiety and tension.
To use as a medicinal plant, boil four or five leaves in a cup of water. Filter and drink once or twice a day.
6. Ginseng
Ginseng, on the other hand, is a medicinal plant that relieves mental and physical fatigue. It also cures severe colds and is believed to help men with erectile dysfunction.
To use as an herbal medicine, boil 1tsp of its dried root in a cup of water for ten minutes. Filter and drink one to two cups per day.
7. Lemongrass
Lemongrass or lemongrass is a fragrant herb that is also used as a laxative or food odor.
It is also believed to be an effective herbal remedy for various ailments such as the following: diarrhea, toothache, difficulty urinating, abdominal pain, back pain, rheumatism, high blood pressure and headache.
For medicinal use, boil its leaves or roots and drink it.
8. Guava
Guava is not only a delicious fruit that is a favorite of many Filipinos. It is also an effective herbal medicine especially for itches and wounds on the body.
Confined guava leaves are believed to be an effective remedy for wounds caused by circumcision and childbirth. It is also said to cure ulcers, rheumatism, sore gums, diarrhea and constipation.
9. Kalamansi
Another nutritious fruit and spice in herbal medicine is lime.
Its juice is believed to cure cough, cold, high blood pressure as well as itching and tanning of the skin. Just squeeze the juice of its fruit and mix it with water and drink.
10. Guyabano
Guyabano is another fruit that we Filipinos love. Apart from the delicious and nutrients contained in its fruit, it is also an effective medicinal plant for various ailments.
It is said to be effective in treating diarrhea, dry feet, eczema, rheumatism, and colds. There are also studies that say that fruit juice is effective in preventing the spread of cancer in the body.
These are just a few of the medicinal plants found here in the Philippines. There are many other plants around us that are effective and may be the answer to the illness we have been dealing with for a long time.
