It is natural for us Filipinos to love to eat, which is why we always eat as if we are insatiable. For this reason we do not really care what is nutritious and harmful for our body, what is important to us now is that it is delicious and achieves the satisfaction of satiety. Nowadays people do not have time to prepare healthy food, because it is overshadowed by activities that lead to more enjoyable food processes or so-called instant food.

What exactly are processed foods? These are the foods we usually find in cans that can only be eaten with a little heat. They help us today because of the lack of time to prepare nutritious and good for our body. But it also has a detrimental effect on our body.

Adverse effects of frequent eating of processed foods:

1. Kidney problems

Processed foods are high in sodium, phosphorus, and a variety of artificial spices. Frequent consumption of these substances can be detrimental to our health, particularly to our kidneys. It can cause kidney stones that can cause blockage of the urinary tract.

2. High blood pressure

High sodium levels affect blood pressure. Excessive consumption raises blood pressure and causes high blood pressure. If left untreated, it can lead to stroke or heart attack.

3. Malnutrition

With the daily consumption of processed foods it no longer meets the proper needs of our body when it comes to the nutrients we need. Due to the limited number of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, malnutrition is the consequence of individuals who rely solely on these types of foods.

It is not right that we cook canned every day. one of its dangers to our health is the chemical bisphenol A. bisphenol A is what is put in the lining of the can and it acts as a protector against metal and aluminum in food. It can affect our hormones. Eating canned food is more dangerous for pregnant women, it can affect the baby's reproductive system. People today are more obsessed with red meat but always remember that the redder the meat the more preservatives are placed. Eating canned foods is not bad but if it is daily that the problem starts, the result is chronic poisoning which means slowly poisoning your body, eating these kinds of foods causes to have cancer and affect all parts of the body. It can also cause hypertension and obesity. Experts advise to look carefully at the label of a product, if it contains many chemical substances that are more dangerous to our health, also slowly consume the reddish product no matter how delicious it is others who are careful rather than regret later when severe illness.

Food is very important in a person's life as well as our health. Eating right is a big deal for our health. Eating nutritious foods is important, it does not matter if it is imported from abroad and if it is expensive what is important it is nutritious for our health. Eating green leafy vegetables, fresh fruit and drinking milk and water and exercising can help prevent illness.

Food additives and canned food preservatives

By Dr. Luis Gatmaitan M.D.

SO MUCH chemicals are added to our daily diet. We do not realize it because it is mixed. If we eat canned food, we do not think that the food does not rot because it contains many preservatives. Note that the duration of the expiry date on the plastic or canned container, is proof that many chemicals are mixed to keep it fresh over time.

No one really loses by eating fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, or chicken. But we just can't avoid eating foods with preservatives. Only, we should cut down on eating them, if possible.

Artificial sweeteners saccharin and cyclamates are associated with the presence of bladder cancer. The tannic acid found in alcohol and fruits can lead to liver cancer. Aflatoxin, found in ripe peanuts, milk, and corn, is also associated with liver, stomach, and kidney cancer. Even the artificial sweetener aspartame (found in cola drinks labeled “light” or “zero”) is also associated with cancer.

Eating dairy products and meat that may be contaminated with steroids and antibiotics also increases the risk of developing cancer. Such food additives, if ignored, increase our risk of developing cancer.

Here are some food additives to avoid or reduce:

• Aspartame: Chemical sweetener found in Equal and NutraSweet

• Saccharin: Artificial sweetener used in Sweet ‘n Low.

• Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): Flavors or adds extra flavor to food.

• Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT): Mixed to prevent greasy or fatty foods from flowing

• Nitrites: Preservatives that are added to stored meats to prevent them from rotting or changing flavors such as corned beef, tocino, longganisa, and other canned

• Sulfur Dioxide, Sodium Bisulfite, Sulfites: Used to keep dried fruits and dried shrimps fresh.

• yellow Dye No. 6: Used in candy and softdrinks as coloring

• Citrus Red Dye No. 2: Used orange skin coloring
