There are various factors affecting the academic performance of a student. One factor we can consider is the academic procrastination. Academic procrastination is a form of of procrastination peculator to education. Procrastination may be defined as a way to avoid or escape from undesirable task. It has been described also as an intentional, unreasonable postponement of the taken decisions, being unaware of the fact that this will bring certain negative consequences. According to studies, the common form of academic procrastination among students is waiting until the last minute to turn in paper or to study for an examination. Due to lack of motivation, fear to failure or success, people do procrastinate (Milgram, Natin & Mower, 1993).

One that contributed to academic procrastination is the excessive use of smartphone. It has become a popular medium of social as well as academic connection. In Philippines, as of 2019, there were approximately 74 million smartphone users in the country. 94 percent of 18-29 years old are using internet and having a smartphone . To relax from the stress we’re dealing due to paperworks and homeworks from school, we distract ourselves and one way of it is through our cellphones. However, we sometimes spend too much time on using our smartphones for these certain activities like browsing on social media, playing online games or watching online movies that will cause us to delay our homeworks. Research shows that excessive usage of smartphone is associated with a poorer performance of students in academic. Thus, there is no conclusive evidence that the smartphone has really increased or decreased student academic performance, therefore, we need to re-examine the impact of the smartphone on the academic performance of university students.

Nowadays, student relies on smartphone as it becomes their medium of past time. But if not manage responsibly, it will negatively affects student’s physical and mental health that will result to academic failure. Researches found that using smartphone lead students to procrastinate and it definitely affects their academic performance.
